After taking very greatful advice off others earlier, my problem was still not sorted so decided to restore default settings as someone suggested and try again.
Put in wireless, scan it found my SSID put in WEP code no problem.
When i did internet connection test went to obtain IP address wrote checking then FAILED and at the bottom the attempt to obtain IP address timed out.
I then went to network settings Chose EASY, WIRELESS, SCAN picked up my SSID again no problem. Choose automatic for settings and said it had saved.
Tested connection again checking IP FAILED.
Went back and put in Manually
Gives a list
IP address......I put this in...know it is definitely correct
Subnet Mask is already in and correct
Default router, Primary DNS and Secondary DNS i leave at zeros
At the bottom i only have the choice of X to Edit O to cancel
I cannot get further i dont want to edit as i have inputted everything i want to and if i cancel it wont know my IP address.
Looking on the playstation site it suggests the right arrow key which worked for all the other pages but this does nothing and like i say X just wants me to Edit.
Anyone have any ideas.....I have now spent hours and hours on this and am thinking of totally cancelling Easter.
Sorry if I have gone on a bit.

Managed to find DNS numbers...first time did the check the IP address finally succeeded but the DNS gave an error code.

I have just rechecked out of desperation and lo and behold it is now saying succeeded.

This is getting stranger by the minute as it seems some time it will connect others it wont.

Not even going to bother going on line now too late....will get my son to check in the morning but it looks like it will be OK

IT now feels like wake up in the morning.....Will the PS3 work today? its anybodies guess.

Thanks for your answer...keep your fingers crossed for me.

you have to reset your router while ps3 ands laptop are on as they are currently on same ip address as ps3 was off beforen you last turned it on

reset and it will issue different 1's and you will be ok to enter wep etc

I had loads of trouble trying to get my PS3 to work with WEP in my network. In the end I gave up and switch the whole network to WPA, which solved the problem.

Take it back and get a 360, you know it makes sense,....

(light blue touchpaper and retreat to a safe distance..)

Makes sense until you get your red ring.

get some ointment for your red ring, the doctor can prescribe some.

and stay off spicy curries for a while!

Odd, my PS3 doesn't get a red ring. Must be something about shoddy Microsoft equipment that activates the red ring, perhaps you win a prize like having to get a new one?

Perhaps.

Still, I like having a large selection of decent games to play, not just a jumped up blu-ray player.

(oh, and i have both, lol)

I wonder who this applies too ......

Trolls are people who for no reason want to disrupt a forum topic by constantly posting out of context posts, derogatory comments, throwing insults, making personal attacks and deliberately inciting a negative response from other members. This is called trolling; in public forums and won't be tolerated here.

so the PS3 disc read error is caused by what exactly?

I now know 6 mates who have had the same problem (to be fair to Sony they have replaced the consoles even the ones out of warranty, although that makes me think that they know it's a problem) and admittedly I know of 13 mates with the RROD (I'm not counting multiple failures) but to be fair to microsoft they do have a lot more consoles in the marketplace and I don't know of any with the extended heatsink that have gone yet. I guess I'm lucky, I've had both failures.

If you open up either machine you will notice that they are both very poorly made. I just wish that the fanboys on both sides would drop dead in some kind of global smugness epidemic.
