Have you tried giving the blueray drive a good clean?
#2
can't clean it as the disc wont spin in it.

Anyone ?

If you don't mind opening it up, you can get a cotton bud, dip it in Isopropyl alcohol and then give the laser 'eye' a clean. Used to work on PS2s with DRE (unless they were well and truly dead). I've never tried or even read about opening up a PS3 so i'm not sure if it's a big job to get to the laser or not..

I would back up your game saves(not all can be copied) and do a full format of the PS3.
This takes many hours.
If it still doesn't work, then you can buy a new laser for £30 - £40.

tried the formatting, never worked. Anyone ever opened one up ?

What GB model do you have, and how long did the format take?

The Blu Ray drive is extremely easy to remove. You can get a complete drive which is easy to replace by someone with next to no knowledge, but the cost spirals.

Changing just the laser is a little harder.

It's a 160 GB version, bought it not last xmas but one before.
Format took about 5-10 minutes but said it would take 9 hrs. Saying tha, it's hardly used so not actually too much on it.
Oh, and it's the Phat one

A full format would take hours, not minutes.

It doesn't make a difference if it has data on it or not. The 160GB is just an 80Gb machine with a larger hard drive as far as i'm aware. You can do it yourself if you are confident, or know someone that could do it.

There's plenty of vids on Youtube. Realistically, it will take about an hour to an hour and a half to do for someone not used to taking a PS3 apart.

Do you stand your PS3 vertically, or 'lay it' horizontally typically?

Have you tried the alternate orientation to see if the discs read when the laser in the drive is reading in a different plane?

Try the old "Sale of Goods act" thing, the place you bought it may cave in and fix for free!

Try the 2 year guarantee rules that apply to Europe. The last I heard the UK hadn't strictly ratified the law but many people have successfully quoted it and got items fixed. The UK has a 6 year rule that applies if the item is proved to have a fault from manufacture. If this is a common design flaw fault you are covered for up to 6 years! A PS3 should last a reasonable time. 18 months is not a reasonable time. Push it with the store and the manufacturer and don't give up.

My cousin got one replaced by the whole Consumers Act thingy by Sony when his died after the 12 month period.

Not covered for up to 6 years.
But can make a claim up to 6 years from purchase.

We'd all be able to make use of Sony's goodwill programme if we didn't have threads like this one advising people how to abuse it:

Free replacement PSP or PS3 for your broken or faulty one?

eBay sellers managed to find buyers for their broken consoles when buyers signed-up to the (now defunct to new subscribers) "Continuous Play" service so the machines were fixed for free.

Other eBay sellers sold the information of how to do this.

If you need some points of contact to make Sony Customer Services aware of an issue you are having with a member of the PlayStation family, may I direct you to my comment #263 (using 'posts per page' of 60; "Mar 05, 2009 10:04")?

thanks to all, got it from Dixons so might give them a shout about it.
The PS3 lies horizontally but will try vertically later tonight.

Called Dixons this afternoon and they are referring it to the out of warranty dept and girl reckons they will repair it or give me a monetary value for it if not financially feasable. Will let you know how I get on.
Thanks

Dixons got back to me after a 9 day wait. They said if I send it off to Sony, pay the £131 to get the refurbished unit, Dixons will refund me the money.
Pretty pleased at getting a result out of this. Have hated Dixons since they didn't honour the 42" £1 LCD Samsung that was on this site in the early days. Anyone else remember it.
They have gone up a little in my estimations.

thats mint m8 bet ur well chuffd, i got our toshiba tv from dixon and dey were fine, v good price wen i got it too 1080p ps3 is propa gud.

Also could take out Sony own playstation insurance, it's a fiver a month and they do don't check to see if it's already working when you take it out so they will send you a new one. What's the catch with the dixons one??
#22
yeah, wasn't looking forward to forking out £131. Gonna avoid Sony in the future because of it.

They ended that insurance ages ago.
So you can't use that now.

No catch, bought it from them and they are gonna refund me the cost of fixing it.
Fair play to them.

Sorted, just got my refund from Dixons.
