Sony has issued a pre-emptive and overwhelming defence of PlayStation 3 ahead of a BBC Watchdog show tonight.

The television programme will focus on the hardware failure rate of the console and the so-called "yellow light of death", as well as highlight Sony's apparent refusal to fix the broken machines.

In response, Sony has written an enormous six-page document - reprinted exclusively on GamesIndustry.biz - that questions the validity and accuracy of the Watchdog report.

"From the correspondence to date, I have serious concerns as to the accuracy of these allegations and the likely tone of the Watchdog report," wrote Ray Maguire, MD of Sony UK, in response to Watchdog's allegations.

"The information that you have provided suggests a fundamental misunderstanding of the technical issues and a mis-characterisation of SCEUKs Out of Warranty repairs policy."

Gonna be a lot of 360 fanboys watching the show no doubt :whistling:

Although tbh the failure rate is apparently quite high, which surprised me as I don't know anyone who has had a problem with any model since launch, wheras most of my 360 owning friends have had some sort of repair carried out.

Did Watchdog do the xbox360 already??

At least Microsoft admits it had a lot of machines going and gave increased warranties etc. Sony are just in denial by the sounds of it!
#5
in teresting to see how it pans out as they have been pretty good with warranties , ive had a few replaced out of warranty bought second hand, so no complaints from me
#6
The problem is no where near the problem that the xbox 360 faces but because they took out the bc I wish my ps3 lasts until I die. Also based on uk trade laws an acceptable time for a high cost console should be around 3-4 years.

Have to same I a neutral games fan. Back in the day I had themegadrive and snes and lovedboth. Today I have the PS3 and xbox360. To sony's defence I have owned the original PS3 since launch day. Play it far more then the xbox360 and never had one problem! Where with my xbox360 I am on my 5th!!!!!!! not to mention controller issues. I now only buy original xbox360 games such as Halo. Multi format games such as fifa etc always PS3. So maybe I have been lucky with the PS3. But eithe way its not as bad as xbox360. (Although graphics tend to be more brighter, colourful on the xbox360 then PS3. Same with the snes over megadrive.

So

The 360 would have defeated the ps3 hands down in the console war if it wasn't so damn unrelaible... hopefully a lesson learnt at Microsoft...

do you really think it would be so popular if they had prevented piracy like sony have though and also reducing the price for a bare bones entry console to under a 100 quid was a major factor not to mention the hd dvd add on which cost people god knows how much.....

impossible for the ps3 to compete with price but now look at the figures gone through the roof since the slim and slight price reduction
#12
Why do sony keep bringing out differen t models? 60gb 40gb 80gb 120gb now a slim 120gb???

You missed the 20Gb, 160Gb, and soon-to-be available 250Gb.

PS. There wasn't a 120Gb "Phat" model; just a PS3 Slim 120Gb.

Same reason that there has been core, arcade, pro, premium and elite 360s...... to try and cater for both casual users, and dedicated gamers. Difference is Microsoft have had decent price gaps between their models where as Sony's haven't been that different in price until recently.

Sony haven't 'prevented' anything yet.. the cost of blank blu-rays makes piracy a non starter, that like saying because you can play illegal downloads on both the psp & ds they should be comparable in sales figures.

There are a lot of external factors to take into account but when you do take them all into account if it wasn't so prone to damage the 360 should be the console of choice for non jrpg fans, based on the fact that (so i'm told) the online experience is better, it's cheaper and it has a bigger library of games.

As it is I'd always recommend the ps3 over the 360 to family and friends simply as i dont want them blaming me when it ineviably RROD's...

sony have prevented piracy with the ps3 hence there being no pirate scene.....your reference to blu rayts being unaffordable is ridiculous i have a laptop capable of burning blu rays and they are not that pricy for the storage you get on them and they are only a few extra quid:)

the ds has over 4000 games the iphone has even more than that but the psp doesnt even have 200 titles but the difference is the quality and depth of the gameplay.

sony plans to release thousands of smaller games playable on the psn to keep up with the likes of apple who are the newest players on the scene. different core markets but still adapting non the less

psn is free and getting better all the time ime, cross game chatting is the main thing missing but at least its free

You've got to try and be objective about it caspar or you end up sounding like a deluded fanboy. Ds owners would argue (as would I) that there are plenty of DS games that have more depth and quality than the 200 on the PSP.

What sony plans to do on the PSN is fairly immaterial until they actually do it.

The PSN might be free and it's free for a reason - Sony couldn't charge for something that at launch was particularly flawed and they'd now struggle to do the about turn and ask you to pay for it without offending most of their user base.

The only sony console to not fall victim of piracy is the ps3 and i'm fairly confident that it's not down to planning or they'd have made the same provision with the ps2 & psp... 3000's now moddable!?!? So we can assume it's likely to be down to the format, the reason the gamecube didn't fall fowl of the pirates? the discs..

I honestly don't even begin to understand why people feel some sort of loyalty to a brand of games console unless they can only afford one and feel indebted to justify their purchase by rubbishing it's competitors.

For the record (you can check my prior posts on this subject) I carry my PSP around with everywhere, I would be lost without it. The xbox is my most used console (even though I seem to be alone on my hatred for the pad) and I have purchased every major console since the snes on launch day.

If you search the gamecentral website there are some actual failure rates, i listed them a while ago.

Ps3 was around 10% (which did suprise me) 360 was around 30% and wii was at 4% (i think)

Incorrect. Dunno how much blu rays are these days but they are way cheaper than a new full price game (by several thousand percent). Sony have successfully beat piracy (to date) - makes you wonder then why their games are the same price as xbox360s when we keep being told "piracy causes price rises for the rest of you"

Yeah they are the figures I saw when you posted them, and like you I was shocked/surprised at the 10% figure for the ps3. In some ways I'm surprised the wii figure isn't higher due to people bricking their wiis via attempted soft mods

You're the 360 fanboy he's referring to, the fact you're reading and posting on this thread proves it, as you don't own a PS3. Please go and comment on one of the RROD threads, this one has nothing to do with you.

Your the only fanboy troll I still know that is left who wasn't banned from before, though the mods do delete most of your posts in the deals section when it comes to the 360, Oh and this is a discussion you idiot everyone is supposed to join in...
