Can they have separate profiles?

It's not something I have tried, but may work.

yup, your nephew needs to make his own profile on the ps3 then he'll have his own save :)

Create a new User Account on the PS3 XrossMediaBar by moving to the far left menu column ("Users") & selecting "Create New User".

Follow the instructions on-screen to create a Sub-Account & you will then have two distinct areas to "log" into; each will have their own "Game" > "Saved Data Utility" area.

Alternatively, you could try connecting an external USB drive or memory stick, or any other memory card (depending on which PS3 model you are using) & copying the specific data files to the external storage device before the younger player uses the machine (but don't forget to copy them back afterwards).

Not all games allow you to copy the saved data though, so go with the first option in preference.

I have 7 profiles on one of our PS3s... each have their own data for game progress.

I'd say the complete opposite. Idiot proof instructions are better than just 'create a new account'
