I went to my local computer shop to buy a hdd to put in my ps3. Spoke to the shopkeeper as to which is the best one for a ps3 he suggested some but also said that Sony are placing restrictions on replacing hdd on ps3's so i have to be careful.
He said some ps3's still accept new hdd but some do not.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case? if it is then how do i find out if my ps3 will accept a new hdd.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a muppet of a shopkeeper who is more worried you might return to him with a broken ps3.

Didn't click the link before, but having just done so, I see it's a 500GB drive, I think that the PS3 only takes a 320GB.

Ps3 will take a 500gb quite happily, ive heard it will take 1Tb or more.
#7
PS3 will take way beyond 500GB+ easily, though only a couple of manufacturers have thus far produced a HDD that large internally and of the correct size and compatibility to fit and work inside a PS3. 500GB ones are coming down in price already so it'll be onto 750GB and 1TB next later this year/2010.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case? if it is then how do i find out if my ps3 will accept a new hdd.

Look inside your PS3's user manual, it practically encourages you to upgrade... if you're able to - or check out the HDD bay on the side of the PS3 to see any other details available. Mine's a 60GB original model and I updated to a 320GB easily.

You're gonna need a USB hard drive or equivalent to store your current data on before transfering to any possible new HDD.

I fitted myself a 250gb hdd into my PS3 i searched for one online and it was so simple to fit in, my brother thought it was beyond me because I am a woman :| but I believe SONY wants users to upgrade the hdd and it is hardware based so it can take pretty much anything you throw at it (not literally lol)

Was the PS3 a secondhand one? because maybe the shop keeper knows the hdd comparment might be damaged or something, my friend tried to yank out the hdd from the PS3 and damaged the casing.. they had to shove it in and then gluegun it down so it dont move lol.

Also one user did say something that made sense.. Shop keepers like to sell the item down and that is it.. they dont like it when you say can you upgrade this or add this etc... because to them they think if you have problems you are going to come back to them or maybe mess up the device :P

You can always ring sony directly if you want to know 100% if your system can be upgraded or if the shop keeper does not know what he is talking about.. IF you want a free option :P ring gamestation/game and ask them that you want to know if you can upgrade the HDD in your PS3

hope it helps
