PS3 help!!!!!

hey guys,

I purchased a ps3 last night 2nd hand which was advertised as a new 80gb model which was a few days old.

Ive got it home and checked the system info and its actually displaying as 55gb. so im presuming this is the 60gb version.

the question I would like to ask, is there anyway of finding out what actual model the hardware in this unit is ? coz ive got a feeling ive been skanked and the 60gb drive has been placed inside the machine (and it not actually being a legit 60gb which can play ps2 games)

ive tried registering the product but you need exact day, month and year of purchase which I simply dont know.

do ps3 have a telephone number where I could ring ?

it has the model number : cechg03 - when i search for this , the majority seem to be 40gb models. so im a bit worried ive been skanked.

If there's 4 usb ports on the front and a slot for memory cards then it's a genuine 60gb

60Gb has 4 USB ports on the front and is matt black finish as opposed to gloss black

40/80GB are identical apart from HDD size

it may be that there is stuff stored on it taking up space, but 25GB seems alot
#3
have you compared the serial numbers of the box and the system?
#4
What about pulling out the HDD (only 1 screw) and check the drive itself.
Guy might of upgraded it.

PS if he had Lynx on it takes up 10gb
#5
You got very lucky because the 60gb is worth more than the 80gb because only the 60gb can play old ps1 and ps2 games.

Ive got 2 60gbs and theres 4 usb ports at the fron for the 4 controllers and also it has the flap on the front for the sd cards etc

yeah its displaying as 47GB/55GB free. so its def a 60gb hardrive, and its only got 2 usb ports, so it would seem that i have been skanked.

looks like Ill be sending the boys round to this guys house.

Sounds like you got a 40GB that someone has thrown an old 60GB HDD into. Was it off ebay?
#8
you should have got your facts striaght before you went and bought it. you wont be able to get your money back , SOLD AS SEEN as they say
#9
Did you get it from ebay? You should open a paypal dispute now!

nah i bought it off gumtree. I understand that its bought as seen, but at the end of the day it was purchased in good faith that whats sold is exactly what is said on the advertisement tin. I have his address and telephone number, so I will certainly be sorting the unit.

I wasnt familar with ps3s, so I didnt know exactly how to check everything. it had the 80gb box, looked new. and it was all working. so i bought it purely on faith.

Hes deleted the oringal advertisement but im hoping gumtree still have evidence of it.

Actually they're all gloss black finish (in the uk at least) the difference lies in the 'playstation' font which is a silver gilded look on the 60gbs and matt finished on the others.

EDIT : I'm officailly sad for knowing that!

Did you get a dual shock controller? which is standard on 80 gig model .
#14
You gonna send some mates round to his house?
#15
I think its a dual shock ? how do i tell ? im presuming its the one with the 2 axis pads on ? ,

if they've gone to the trouble of swapping the hard drives then its possible they done it with the controller as well.

It should say Dualshock3 above the controller in blue. You should confront him!

You tell the a lot of mince, tell them you purchased it at the weekend from ebay and say the machine is new (or it looks new!)

If you get an understanding cus ser person they will put it through for you unless its already been registered!
#19
mate dont rush, format the hard drive and then check or check the serial numbers like i said before with the box and console or give sony a call and they will tell you if you got a 80gb or not.
#20
Take the hdd out and check it instead of going by what it says on the ps3.

how much did you pay ?

£150-£180 is about right.
#22
thanks for the help guy! ive had the hardrive out and its definately a 60gb harddrive in what appears to be the 40gb model.

I paid £175 for it. but i've been on and they wont offer me a refund but they have offered me £40 back. So its a cheap do for £135! just a shame it wasnt what Id hoped it was.

I will ring sony today and try and register the product.

If the harddrive has been replaced does that void the warranty ?

it was probably a 40gb model originally which wont have a warranty now.

they are non-transferable anyway.
