PS3 help/advice please

I'm wondering a few things about this product and hope a few on here can help me out.

1) What are the main differences between the 40gb and 60gb other than the obvious hdd space, extra usb ports and backwards compatability?

2) Is it possible to stream media etc over a wireless network?

3) Does the console support divx playback?

4) I was searching around for deals, and found these guys - http://www.renchi.com/renchi/PS3_Consoles_PS3_PlayStation_3_Console_Clear_Black_HDD_40GB_220V_Hong_Kong_Version.htm. Anyone bought from them before and if so, was there import duty and what were the postage costs?

5) I read somewhere that the 110v systems will play over here with no issues - is that correct - doesn't make sense to me!?

Sorry for all the questions, hope someone can help me.

1. well you pretty listed it all, though i think the 40GB has a matt finish and the 60GB a gloss.

2. Yes. i use windows media player and its fine for me.

3. yes, although i had one divx file that didnt play so i guess there are still codec issues.

4. beware of import duty is all i'd say there, you would be as well to pick up a ps3 in the uk, they are not that rare. i priced a playstation eye and the postage on that alone was almost $16 so about £8. you can imagine a cost for a ps3

5. I'm not sure on that, though i would assume you would need a step down transformer.

Thanks very much shanecr.

So, in general, you reckon there's no real benefit to getting a 60gb if you're not into ps1 and 2 games?

Makes you wonder why the 60gb is so sought after and the prices on ebay are plain mental.

well, i dunno, i didnt want a 40GB at all as i have some ps2 games so i got a 60GB. but i didnt pay over the odds either. if you can get a uk 60GB for a fair price id say get it. it you dont care about backwards compatibility then get whatever is cheapest to you.

Everything shanecr said is right apart from;
40gb is still glossy, but the silver parts are matt, and the PS3 does not need a step down convertor.

Regarding streaming; WMP is fine, but Tversity (free software) is better, it will playback more files (it comes with some extra codecs), inc divx, xvid (but some still may not work).

And get a UK model - better to have a garantee etc.

Also, 40gb has a 65nm cell chip - it runs cooler (and argubaly quieter) and has a lower power consumption.

TVersity is great but not worth using to stream already catered for DIVX files as it uses all your pc cpu so obviously its costing a bit in electricity and searching within the program is prone to faults.

Apparently there are reliability problems with the 40gb one......Syzables broke after about 3 hours use......

Hardly an epidemic, you seem to post that in a few threads.

It does apper to be a comon problem with the 40gb one though

I personally use nero to stream as windows media never worked properly with divx previously. I felt that the card reader, and backwards compatability was enough to justify one. Good luck with either one its a great home entertainment system and not aimed at kids although we are all big kids at heart why else would we be buying one, bluray player its just a convenient cover to play fifa and COD4 which is excellent.

Excellent - thanks all for the input.

As I will predominantly be using the PS3 for bluray I may as well get the 40gb version - the prices for the 60gb are mental and I guess it's also being phased out too.

I will of course have to dabble in the gaming side of things...:whistling:

I have a 60GB and may aswell use a 40GB I dont use the extra features [except the memory card slots] which reminds me, you dont get the memorycard thingies on the 40GB.

I think I've mentioned it twice - if this was a discussion solely about the 60gb I wouldn't have mentioned it but if the op is thinking of buying from abroad I think reliability is an important issue.......

I'm sure the op would love to pay return postage to Hong Kong and customs would probably charge again for the replacement!!

40 gig is fine no probs with mine

?

My brother's US PS3 worked fine, they automatically detect the voltage.

You have to use a proper lead, and not an adaptor.

Cheers Bud - I think I'll stick with the UK version for the warranty side of things.

UK PS3 plays region B Blu-Ray, and Region 2 DVD With upscaling which is important to me.

Foreign PS3's will not play DVD's out of region and a lot do not deal with PAL even if Region is correct. Games are theoretically region free, Blu-Ray is a mixture of region locked and region free, there are sites that tell you which on a film by film basis.

Renchi is a great site and they will do their best to help you with Duty and VAT, but that will not work for a PS3, its too big and expensive. But for weird games, accessories etc, they are great, but do check Amazon etc before you commit to a 2 week wait from Japan.

PS3 60 Gb is a small HD, but the HD is easily upgraded. You do need as many USB ports as possible and you need to try and use the wired ethernet connection, unless your wireless Router is close to the PS3. Use Home Plugs @ 85mbps or 200 Mbps if your ADSL connection is very fast.

PS3's are noisy if stood on end, quiet if not - no I don't know why, but I've proved it on mine!!

If you can get a 60 Gb at a sensible price, get it, but it appears 40 gb is only one about at the moment, may be new 80GB model due out??

Best of Luck

The ps3 will play divx 3 or above files, so old divx will not work.

The 360 will play divx 5 onwards.

so check your divx converter and see what version it is.

as i sit hear reading all the sugestion i have made up my mind also the 40gb for me. only one thing remains for someone to find a cracking good HUKD for me.
#20
just saw i posted above saying no probs, mine has since been replaced because of what seems to be the most common fault

The 360 will play divx 5 onwards.

.

So that's why a lot of my older files don't work, I knew it was something codec related but I didn't think it would be as simple as that.
