Hi, my launch 60gb has recently broken and so will now cost me £131 to replace with a refrubished model from sony. The problem is that they only offer a 3 month guarantee so I was wondering where I could get insurance for it to prevent this from happening again. Any help is much appreciated. I'm not too sure whether to get it repaired or just buy a new one.

get contacting the retailer regarding Sales Of Goods Act.

i just told Game.co.uk this about my ylod 60GB, and they said they would repair it for me. sent it off to Total Console Repair, came back, got my saves off it, played a few games and it died again. sent it back to TCR and they said it was unrepairable. GAME sent me a £200 voucher, used it for the pack with 250GB Slim with 2games, traded them in (already had Uncharted 2 and didnt want AVP) and it was down to £240 - end cost = £40 for a hard drive upgrade and a month and abit without a PS3.
result imo.

Call the retailer and say you are covered under the Distance Selling Regulations which are up to 6 years.
Simples.

I have a problem though, I brought it when it was Virgin Megastores so I'm guessing that i have no hope anymore? Thanks for all the advice so far.

wrong.
you have 6 years in which to make a claim but the fault must be proven to be a manufacturing default.
it means getting an engineers report stating that the product has failed due to a manufacturing fault and was therefore not fit for purpose as it should've lasted longer.

how long something lasts is not set in stone and depends on whats its purpose is and how well made it is.

the sale of goods act is NOT a 6 year warranty for you to use to try and scam something out of a retailer.
if an engineers report shows it was fair use/wear and tear, you will get nothing.
if it shows it was over/misuse, you will get nothing.

not in the way you originally described it no.
and its not distance selling, its the sale of goods act. different.

again, the sale of goods act is NOT an extended warranty.

the OP must prove that the fault was not cased by over or misuse or normal wear and tear.
the OP doesnt say exactly what the problem is, so you cannot say for definite that they will be covered by the sale of goods act.

it would also depend on how long Sony deem it reasonable for the 60gb PS3 to last, and whether that could be disputed in court.

for a successful claim under the SOGA, you must be prepared to get an engineers report detailing what the problem is and how exactly it was caused and how it would be rectified, inc parts, labour etc

the retailer's team would verify this with Sony and decide a course of action. could be a replacement, could be a repair, could be a partial refund based on the age of the product.

if Sony and the retailer dispute the report, it could go to court and be decided there.

since the retailer no longer exists, the OP would have to contact Sony direct and challenge them with the engineers report to either agree or disagree.

depending on the fault and causes of it, the OP may get nothing, except more out of pocket.

so no you were wrong, its not a case for the distance selling regulations, and it may or may not be a case for the sale of goods act.

suggest you get your facts straight
