PS3 - Is mine dead?

In all likeliness I'm guessing my PS3 has decided that it doesn't want me to use it, which is fair enough because I haven't touched it for 6 months.

When I turn it on the fans start up, it sometimes goes to the dashboard, the amber light flashes and POW switches off, i then have to pull out the power cable, put it back in and repeat.

if it is dead, it's only 51 weeks old so should in theory be able to take it back to Comet, does anyone have a direct link or phone number for Playstation support, their site isn't as easy to navigate as the 360 site, will they do a door step replacement, and will it be a new or refurb model

If you want the free Sony customer service number, which I just rang last week about my YLOD PS3, then you need to ring 020 7859 5000 which is the Sony Computer Entertainment UK HQ and then ask for Customer Services for PlayStation support.

Sony have just killed the PS3 today by releasing the 3.42 update, it kills any homebrew fun you would wish to have.

...although it is Comet's responsibility initially. Ring them first or you may end up with somebody else's console (rather than your own) back from Sony.

Comet may well give you a new console.

Comet are not the best retailer for giving out replacements, and in fact legally they don't have to after 6 months of the SOGA, unless the customer can prove that the goods were inherently faulty from manufacture, which would involve the item having to be investigated.

Worth a try, but Comet are well within their rights to demand this under SOGA, or most likely just tell the customer to phone Sonys warranty line.

Good stuff, Sony tend to be really good if things are in warranty, had problems with my vaio and they were awesome

I'm hoping that it has 3.41 firmware on it, I don't know how long 3.42 has been out
#14
3.42 has only come out today. It knocks out any installed jailbreak if installed, and prevents installation if not.

Im still after a decent repair service other than Sony for my mates 80Gig. I remember reading ages ago about send away services that are cheaper ? So far tried Sony and Game...Sony price silly money and could get new one in all honesty, Game only repair their own.

Isn't it pretty similar to the RRoD fixes on the 360 ie take it apart remove heat sync, clean off old thermal compound, apply new and fingers crossed, surely only a temp fix though...

the fault with mine is that it has probably collated that much dust over the 6 months of none use, that its upset the insides of the console, but technology shouldn't suffer from this problem

Or you may need to reheat the some of the chips in the PS3 with a heat gun after removing the thermal paste, and then apply the thermal paste.
Mine worked for a week after this, now done it again and is still working been a few days.

My mates is the blu ray not reading any disks. TBH i could most probs do it myself if i knew where to aquire the drive from. But its all time and could turn out to be a pain in the butt if it goes wrong in any way a few months down the line.

It may just be the laser, which is around £30 for a new one, but not guaranteed.

I have fixed a few for friends, and sometimes it doesn't cure it.

my replacement console is running 3.30, is there a way/need to update to 3.41, not the newest (3.42)
