I am looking to set up my PS3 to stream the content from my external HDD via my laptop

The laptop already has Windows Media Centre, and I know I need to download another program to make this work

Do I then need to set up a network using the router?

Any help is appreciated!

Why not just plug the HDD into the PS3 to save having to have the laptop on? But anyway I use PS3 Media Server for my laptop

If your router and pc are connected to the router (wired or wireless) PS3 media streamer will find your ps3 automatically. Then go to films in the xmb and the pc should show up

What format was the filesystem on the hard drive when you tried?

The only software you'll need is a dlna capable media player like Windows Media Player 11

Here's a guide.

There you go then. Google "PS3 media server", download and install, and you are up and running

Is your external hard drive unit in FAT32 [File Allocation Table 32-bit disk sector count] format?

If connecting the drive unit to your laptop for streaming the content to your PS3 you need to ensure that the file sharing options for the PS3 console in the Microsoft Windows "Network and Sharing Center" Control Panel applet are set to allow access to the laptop.

I would personally copy any files from the external drive to your laptop's on-board hard drive if you have the availabile disk capacity so that the speed of transfer across your wireless network is also not reliant upon the speed of transfer (caching) of content from the USB port of the hard drive.
