smithyp1 Avatar

The missus is getting a PS3 free with her new phone contract, mainly for the blu-ray function.
I believe it comes with one controller.

So, what else will we need?
Ive been told a HDMI cable, wireless controller and remote control for the blu-ray use.

Is this right people .... ? Anything else i need or should get?

I think that's it, you don't need all the bits and pieces like other consoles.
#2
wouldn't even worry to much a bout the blu ray control we jut use the ps3 controler
#3
you chose the right time - I've had mine since launch and it's only really worthwhile having one now.

Things you need:

LittleBIGPlanet game
Dualshock controller?
HDMI cable - anyone will do as a dearer one will be no better.
Best to buy the Blu-ray remote if you'd prefer that to using a PS3 controller - even if it is a bit messy and rather large/ugly :(

What size hard drive has it got?

I got a thread on here about upgrading to 320GB for £50 - great if you plan on getting PlayTV
#4
I use the optical cable out for my surround sound!

As above, remote is not needed but is good!

Thanks all so far..

It's a 80gb i think.

We have a 50" Samsung and are saving for a wedding so thinking this might keep us from going out and spending money and obviously taking advantage of a few lovefilm offers on the blu-ray discs :whistling:

Best not to get any games, you will only be left wishing you had a 360 instead.
#7
As above - handy if you got an optical audio cable for 5.1 dolby.

See this thread if you want to upgrade your PS3s hard drive, instructions in post 66.

Really simple stuff

good time to have a ps3 its a top bit of kit, ignore the cheap skates that have the xbox they are jealous

2009 is gonna be a huge year for the ps3 where it will come into its own

the full power of the ps3 has not been utilised yet as having bluray game discs mean games can have 10 times the info of the 360 included on them.

I got both so I never get involved in the Vs debate.

Use my PS3 a lot more though cos I'm always playing blu-rays/dvds/recording with playtv - and the odd game(getting better).

Nice to have wireless built in tho.......
#12
He he i knew the xbox Vs ps3 scrap would happen.

Have already got a wii and im not a big gamer so the ps3 looked the best overall choice.

So what else can you do with a ps3?

Redtube and youporn videos now work on there - not that I tried them before:whistling:

Works best with the dualshock controller when using the web browser.

You use the analogue stick(s) to move the mouse around - blu-ray remote is horrible for web browsing.

Also a standard keyboard will work when plugged into one of the ps3 usb ports. I'll hve to try out my wireless keyboard sometime.
#16
I've got a Logitech wireless keyboard hooked up at the moment and I didn't have to configure it or anything - worked straight away.

Also your incorrect about the ps3 being able to store 10 times more data than the 360. ps3 uses 50gb blu rays, 360 uses 8.5gb dual layer dvds so not quites 10 times as you state. However the ps3 may have more disk space and can hold more they are not directly comparable. This is due to compression, 360 games can be higly compressed and read straight from the disk whereas this is not currently possible with bluray.

An example a 20gb standard game image can be compressed to fit on a 360 disk however would take up the full 20gb bluray space.

lol at the pedantic answer not quite 10x lol ok well the ps3 can read 400gb blu ray discs which says that you havnt quite got all the facts:p

the reason the xbox games can fit on 1 dvd is because they are not the full games mate as you should know they miss out scenes etc if you are talking about torrents and such

i have both and the ps3 is a superior machine in every way im afraid

like i said the power is not being fully utilised yet and wait till killzone gets a full release the ps3 is worth buying for that alone

PS3 can read new 400 GB Blu-ray Disc

New Blu-ray super multi-layer optical disc technology allows PS3 games to potentially pack in 400 GB worth of data.

Pioneer is now showcasing the biggest Blu-ray disc ever that can hold 400 GB worth of data. The technology features 16 separate layers on a single-side Blu-ray disc with 25 GB storage capacity on each layer, which totals 400 GB. Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima must be giddy about the prospects, seeing as how he loves lengthy cutscenes and the highest definition assets possible.

"The technology of the super multi-layer read-only disc is based on Blu-ray Disc (BD) with a breakthrough in material of reflective layers, according to Pioneer High Fidelity Taiwan. The specifications of the pick-up head (PUH) of the disc is the same as those for the PUH of blank BD discs, and therefore the Pioneer discs can be read on BD players, the company said."

Pioneer says the development plans are to create these super read-only discs in 2008-2010, rewritable discs in 2010-2012, and 1 TB discs in 2013.

Aren't most multi platform games limited to the Xbox 360 spec then just ported over to PS3?

^^ @ casparwhite:

Remember tho bro - some of us have had our PS3s a l-o-n-g time...

TBH it's only just become a really good games console purchase these last few months - it's supposed to be a games console above all else.

I think that's often the case - cos most multiplatform games get released on pc too.

So it's often 360/PC>ported>PS3.

It's a business afterall, doing it that way saves on costs - maximises all those green-backs earned

Does the PS3 utilise these 400gb disks.....no. And if they did then same problem as before, blu ray drive cant read at a fast enough rate for games so therefore a large chunk of it needs to be stored on the harddrive. So the bigger the game the longer the wait for the downloading to the harddrive and more space it will inturn take up.

Reality is the 360 will probably have its successor out before these 400gb disks are utilised and become mainstream. As stated in the article the estimates of 2008-2012, well they certainly arent ready this year, reality is that will be pushed back and the cost at 1st of these disks will be too high to use for games so in end costs will be passed onto consumer. So add another year onto those estimates. Truth is 50gb is plenty for gaming and this super blu ray disk wouldnt be utilised until the next round of gaming machines become available.

And sir you are wrong at saying torrents are not the full game, all 360 games ae compressed onto a 8.5gb dvd. Torrents of these are a 1:1 direct rip of the game so 100% copy of the game, they are not missing scenes as such. The only thing that i can think you may be referring to is the leak of developers/review copies that occured a few months ago. If the copies werent a 100% like for like rip then MS would easily be able to ban everyone playing copies!!

thanks for reading it properly lol

we are talking potential and when is this new xbox coming out that you talk about and will it use a now defunct hddvd format again or blu ray which the ps3 will still be using

after yoy have paid another 300 pounds on top of your 360 for this new machine the ps3 will still be going lol
#37
Sony wont make the mistake of releasing way later than the new xbox again, that would be suicide on their part.

Yeah - I agree with your points made about the media capabilities. My PS3 is used literally every day for all the above you mentioned.

Without good games though it could of gone the way of any other console that had very few brilliant games.

We've waited a long time for a decent exclusive besides the odd 7/8 out of 10 release every other 3-4 months. I even had a thread started the other week cos I was so surprised - "PS3 in saved by side-on platformer shock" (LBP)

Still, I got professor leyton playin on my DS so what do I care
#39
Thing is with my experience of the PS3. The best games are the games made solely for the ps3 by Sony themselves or other exclusive parties and they are some of the best games i've played on any console. e.g. Unharted, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, LBP, MGS4. They prove what the ps3 is capable of yet very little else follows.

LOL - so the 360 can read data quicker than a blu-ray drive. Get real man!

The drawback for the PS3 is that most multi-platform games are held back by the 360's inferior architecture and low data storage.
