PS3 no longer reads blu rays (4 months out of warranty)

Had my ps3 since christmas december 08, about a month ago it stopped reading blu ray discs, still reads normal dvd's but won't accept any blu rays. Was wondering if theres any way of getting this fixed for free? I don't know if I could argue the console is no longer fit for purpose, I don't really think a 16 month lifespan is acceptable for something that cost £300. Otherwise it will cost £99 to repair which I dont have at the moment (plus I think this is too much for repair anyway). Any ideas?

Maybe Sony have disabled Blu Ray support in a new update??

You'll be covered under the SOGA, don't worry. Take it back to where you got it

If only, then maybe I could moan to amazon for a refund! Was actually hoping to get some money back for the removal of the other os, which I could have then put towards the repair.

Argue SOGA with Amazon for the faulty Blu-ray, if all else fails they may pay some money towards the repair.

Got it from amazon, which probably makes returning it to them more difficult.

maybes. havent heard anyone using SOGA with them (yet).

they may ask for an engineers report to prove you didnt cause it (through anything other than normal use) and it was a manufacturing fault. some basic ones are around on the internet though. email them and find out.

edit: just had a quick google - doesnt look good....

they only got a £70 cheque...

my advice would be to push for whatever you can get in way of a refund from amazon, and then buy a slim. dont pay for a repair from any company other than sony - wont use official parts. had my YLOD 'fixed' by TCR (paid for by GAME) and lasted 2hours. get your saves off your PS3, then flog it on ebay...

Actually I'd be happy with £70, thats more than enough to buy a replacement laser and I could fix it myself. However I've just emailed amazon about the other OS removal asking for a refund, might sour their view on giving me money as a gesture of good will for this fault.
EDIT: Well I've emailed amazon, hopefully they send me a reply regarding the other os feature before I get one back for this, if I can get any money it will be a bonus.
