PS3 or alternative?!?

Hey up all...

At the weekend when we went to one of the lads houses for a few shandies I finally found out what a PS3 looks like... And I liked it... Really liked it!

Looking at the prices though, I'm wondering if there might be a better alternative. I'm not a massive gamer and so my PS2 keeps me happy enough in that department, but seeing the other things it could do amazed me. Web, half a million (nearly) albums, vids including DivX listed on there and umpteen other things that I probably never picked up on.

Any suggestions - or indeed more info on what it can do _ I got a bit lost on Sony's site - would be more than welcome!!!

Cheers folks!

Soon through play TV you can store record and watch TV
upscaling DVD player at that

Best upscaler, and best blu ray player on the market, at the best price, apparently it even plays games! Another vote for the PS3 here, before the XBOX fanboys come streaming in!

Go on get the PS3 dont wait, its amazing streaming Hd content, Divx, xvid name it anything pictures etc. I use to have the toshiba Hd DVD player but I can say that there is a diff in its upscale and what the ps3 does. You will not regret it.

Ah yes very true, all the extra functions of each console are very nice but I hardly use any of them

PS3: I use for photos/blu ray player and some select titles MGS4 GT5 etc

Xbox360: I use for playing most of my games/ cheap hd dvds/ streaming music whilst I shoot baddies

Thanks for feedback so far...

Nearly... I was just wondering if there might have been a better option considering games were not really a big item on the agenda.

That's good as the lack of recording telly/freeview was a wee niggle. It's an extra £60-70 though!

IMHO...CURRENTLY 360 is the better gaming machine...
PS3 IS the better machine, but NOT for gaming, but it will be in the near future

360 is cheaper with a larger selection of games

Both do media streaming :)

Wow, some one who I agree with very true words

Got mine at the weekend, now I'm a 'PS360' fanboy , I'm liking the free on-line side of it instead of the chargeable 360, having a great laugh playing 'Buzz, sofa to sofa, on-line.

Excellent machine! just waiting for the 40 gig to plummet in price, which it will.........sooon!!!!!!

Games - like I say - aren't as big a deal as other factors. If it were games I'd probably have gone for a wii just because they seem to be a bit more fun (especially after those shandies I refered to before:whistling:). I know the games are better on PS3 & 360, but I still like my old speccy ROMS so that tells a story!

My main things are to use as a media centre on a 37" TV, net use (I believe you can use XP on a PS3... Is that right?!?), and if possible the recording of TV/Freeview. As the PS3 has wireless con' that in itself is a massive bonus as I have VM broadband (no telly or phone), so my line and modem/router are upstairs!

Seconded, PS3 is the better machine. 360 has the better games, for now.

XP on a PS3......are you mad :?. LOL

It does most of the media type stuff the majority would want straight out of the box. No need to sully it with nasty things like Windows . Although Windows wouldn't work on it anyway, it wouldn't have a clue how to cope with the Cell processor.

Quote from Wiki -"Sony has been quoted in an interview stating, "It was fully intended that you, a PS3 owner, could play games, watch movies, view photos, listen to music, and run a full-featured Linux operating system that transforms your PS3 into a home computer."

Both are probably the same fo media centre, apart from the HD-DVD of the 360 and the Blu Ray of the PS3.

Net use, the PS3 will shade it, as it is free online gaming, plus, merging with your next point, you cannot install XP, but you can install Linux, so will operate like a normal computer.

Recording of TV and Freeview will be through PlayTV, which you can set uup recordings on the PS£, and you can watch them back either in the TV, or stream them to a PSP, if you have one. You can also set up recordings on the psp, if you are out and have an internet connection, and remember you forgot to set something up.

And yes, the PS3 does come with built in wireless, and is very easy to set up. Overall, the 360 may have the better games at the moment, but as a long term thing, the PS3 will come good.

Stocl levels in Europe of the 40gb PS3 were not very high, so you may not get any amazing deals. Fingers crossed for you anyway.

This looks a good deal for the 80gb version.

Looking like the PS3 then... My poor pockets!

To be honest the 360 was never really in the running as from what I've seen the HDDVD is to be beaten by Blue Ray. I was more interested in comparisons to either a media PC or some kind of device that could record, store media, and access the internet - preferably without being wired.

As for the XP point I was looking on youtube for more info on what a PS3 could do when I stumbled on that nugget of info!

Thaks so fa again!

I heard about that too, i think what they did is installed Linux, and then installed something called VMWare, a software that makes a virtual PC, and ran XP through that. However, doing it this way would make it very slow, so pretty pointless.
