yep google it. theres a distro called yellow dog thats easy to install, or you could try ubuntu.
not sure if the wi-fi works with yellow dog though

you can install XP but its more complicated and probably not so good, http://psubuntu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8364

performance is supposidly not great with windows or linux on a ps3, as they arnt specifically coded to work with the cell processors. apparently the processing power is slightly slower than a 1.6ghz Mac G5.

thing is if all you want to do is check your email and browse the web cant you just buy a bluetooth keyboard and use the built in browser?

So it will be a bit slow then due to 1.6ghz, otherwise nothing will change, still be able to brows, maybe download stuff???

the ps3 isnt 1.6ghz but that is roughly the speed it runs at when using a linux distro. but you will be able to browse etc. but if you havent used linux before im not sure why you would want to install it just to browse. its worth it if you have a good understanding of linux as some people have managed to download and run emulators in the linux environment. but just for browsing i would stick with the built in ps3 one.

i dont think the ps3 would ever be able to match a good desktop setup. but it just depends what you actually want to use the pc for, if you only want it for browsing the web you can do that on the ps3. but theres alot more you can do on a pc, like sound/video/photo editing and proper online gaming (but you would need a good gaming rig to do that)

Don't even think about trying to run a virtual Windows installation (Windows has no support whatsoever for the h/w and it would all have to be emulated), it will be horrible and pretty much useless.

Linux at least has some support for the PS3 h/w and YDL is the "official" distro so Sony are at least supporting it too and it's not just community driven. I've experimented with Linux and tbh while it works unless you've got a specific reason to use it there's no point.

Graphics capability is cripled and as mentioned above it's not even remotely capable of using the full processing power yet.

The web browser already on the ps3 is pretty terrible.
