PS3 Questions....

Hello. I finally picked up my PS3 in Zavvi yesterday after waiting ages and ages for them to be back in stock! I got a killer deal and am very happy with it....the picture/graphics are excellent even on a small non-HDTV....i can only imagine what it will look like in a few weeks when i pick up a 32/37" LCD.

However, how come in the system information the 40GB is only shown as 37GB? And also, how come there is only 31GB when you 1st turn it on? Surely all the software pre-loaded on it doesnt come to 6gb?

Finally, with the remaining space on the 40gb HDD would you say i would ever be worried about space just for playing games on and off line? I dont really intend to store music or video on it. Just want to play games on it, so will that be enough space?

Regards

More than enough space, game saves are a few kb.

If you start downloading demos (at about 1GB each) you'll soon find the HDD filling up. It's really easy to upgrade it with a large HDD though

depends what games you put on. Gran turismo uses 6gb of hdd space alone!

can you tell us what killer deal you got on the PS3? Thanks !!!

I dunno.. ive got a 60GB and almost filled it up. Some of the games (skate for one) seem to use alot of space for game saves, also the installs some games require will soon eat into the space. I'm seriously thinking about upgrading mine to 300GB so i can have as much tv stuff on there as poss

@Smartbuyer - The deal was only killer given my circumstances i think. I bought ps3 + gt5 +any game (i was going to choose MGS4 but chose Pro Evo 2008) for £325.
But i got 10% for using virgin credit card
and saved £30 off the face value of a gift card from someone on HDUK selling one (thanks again!) and in the zavvi sale a few weeks ago i picked up GTA4 for £25! So all in cost £287 for PS3 & 3 games. Not too shabby!

Thanks also to pples answers. I should be ok then.
Any ideas on this tho?

Will be system info and drivers m8 my 60gb one is the same (values obv high) but if your worried about space or you start running out you can just plug an external hard drive in it, i got a 500gb for £53 from pc world and if you get 1 of the cooling fans that plug in the back of ps3 with the extra usb's there will be no USB shortage lol

So you can connect an external hardrive? Whats the cooling fan business about?

Do not forget that the figures quoted by the PS3 and Windows differ from those stated by the manufacturer.

The HD manu. will quote the capacity with a GB repesenting 1000^3.

The PS3 and Windows will quote the capacity wih a GB representing 1024^3.

So, in basic terms... a 60GB HD will appear as just under 56GB, 40GB as just over 37GB etcetera.

Then you take into consideration the space that is reserved by the PS3 for itself (something like 10%)... that's how you end up with what looks too little free space.

Yep sure can no bother plug and play, the 40 gb only have 2 usb's so if got the cooling fan(which i would recomend with the 40gb) the 1 i specified has 2/3 extra usb's an plug into the back so keeps everything neat and tidy and doesnt complicate things with usb shortage :)

Do you have problems with your 40GB overheating then? I've always found it to be much cooler (and quieter) than my 60GB?
