You can fix it yourself very cheaply.
Or if you can't be bothered, then sell it on Ebay and you will get quite a lot for it.
#6
cheaply? i've seen tutorials on youtube where they are heating something within the ps3 and said u have to get it on the right temp or u'll brick it..

Well i mean the thermal paste is cheap, just a few pounds.
The heat gun will be quite costly, but i'm sure there are some cheap ones around or if you can borrow one maybe?
#8
hmm...i'm not really good at fixing things...i tend to make things worse when they need fixing :(
#9
what would you be selling it for??

Look on the bright side, GT5 has turned out to be rubbish, so you don't need it fixed in a hurry after all

No it hasn't

im wondering, my 60gb is still running fine. i assume one day it will give up, but, if i pay sony for a replacement, would i get a 60gb back?? its still going to be cheaper than buying a new ps3 isnt it. but what do you get ?
#14
Ive got 2 here, one 80gb with the same fault as yours, one 60gb with knackered bluray. I refuse to pay Sony the repair costs of £130 and only have a 3 month warranty on the repair. This is the 3rd time ive had a prob, first time it got fixed under warranty on the 80gb and now its gone again. The 60gb ran fine since launch and then went about 6 months ago. TBH id sooner pay the extra £40-£50 and get a cheap slim with a full years warranty than cough up any more on repairs. Then again i may just forget about the PS3 altogether and sell all my games and stuff lol ! PC gaming seems so much better than my experiences with consoles.

Yes, if you pay Sony £131, you will get a refurbed 60GB in return.
You won't be able to tell it from a brand new console.

It may look new, but it's the same old console underneath, you only get a 3 month warranty, and it will definitely YLOD again very soon after you get it, so then you will be in a continuous loop of sending the PS3 off to get it repaired, while paying £130 a time.

It's much better getting a new one.

You really have no idea do you?(Rhetorical)
I have dealt with many replacement consoles over the years, and not one has failed again.

I obviously know more than you, as every console will eventually fail at some point, they do not last forever.
I'm not speaking about the PS3 related comment from experience, just from pretty much everyone on Playstation forums on various sites. You can take a look if you want.

Wow. You really are breaking new ground with this revelation.
Does this go for brand new consoles too?

Yes for a replacement console. Think about it, if the console is 3 years old, when you get it back, the parts will still be 3 years old and will be likely to fail in a short space of time.
Again, take a look at Playstation forums to find this out for yourself.

If a PS3 is sent back with a busted HDD, they don't remove it and put a new one in. Sony put new parts in wholesale.
They don't simply clean it and send it back out again.

DarkKnight

Why should I look at the Playstation forums when I have told you that I have returned many consoles over the years, and not a single one has failed very soon after receiving the refurbed unit?

You said that GT5 was perfect before even playing it too. Was this info gleaned from the same PS forums? You need to stop reading, and start living.

DarkKnight

Yes all consoles, new or old, will not last forever.

Thanks for clearing that up. There's no point in getting a new one either then.

I wasn't talking about HDD replacements, i was talking about the topic of the thread, which was the YLOD fault, keep up.

So you have returned many PS3's with YLOD over the years? If so then my comment stands!

I said PD were perfectionists, i haven't said it's the most perfect game, other than to play along with another members comment.

Thanks for clearing that up. There's no point in getting a new one either then.

There is, because you will have more time to play it before it fails.... rather than sitting at a blank TV.

I can tell you have studied reliability engineering extensively...
#24
DarkKnight,
I will try and make it simple for you so that you have the best chance of understanding.

I have not returned a single console to Sony that was sent by them as a refurbed unit.
#25
I returned an 80gb that lasted approx 6 months after repair ;-)

Yes, I have returned many YLOD consoles that were purchased brand new originally, not a single one that had been refurbed.

DarkKnight

and it will definitely YLOD again very soon after you get it,

right, gonna ring sony soon but noticed there is a shop that also does ps3 in manchester for £50 with 3 months warrenty...

i'm just wondering...pay sony £131 or pay a local shop that does the same thing for £50
#29
Hi,
Same thing happend to my ps3 (phat 40gb) the same night it happend to urs,
we've been reaserching how to fix it etc and apparantly its not a permanant fix, so the other option was to send it bak to sony as the warranty sticker it still intact, but that would cost around 130-140. So we;ve sold ours on ebay for £74, which is going towards our new one...which will be a slim one as i have heard these dont get YLOD.
Hope you find a way to fix or get a new ps3 as it seems like i havnt been on black ops for years :( hahahaha bad times
all the best

Sony will send a courier with another console and swap it for yours. If you kick up a fuss, they will give you 12 months warranty instead of 3. I have never done this, but others have.

Yes that is what i'm thinking when you don't bother to research anything.
Like i said, just go on any forum and see for yourself.
Here is one thread out of hundreds.

Link

And here are some quotes from the thread:

ive had a 60GB replacement three times now

got my replacement monday its lasted 3 days and its packed in so frustrating had 5 faulty xboxs next gen console havin a laugh

Rubbish, most refurbs that my mates have had, have died with in 1 month of use. Name any electrical item that goes wrong, still under warranty, where they send you a used item as a replacement.

mine lasted 2 days not getin tested correctly totally cheesed off paid over £400 for mine

Same sort of thing happend to me. Sony gave me the royal screw job.

Now on my 4th PS3... And it's a 40gb as the had "run out" of 60gb refurbs.

I regret settling for the 40gb now... Stick with it mate, demand what you paid for.

Like i said, from just one thread.

you relaise you have 5 years under the sales of goods act that it has to be fit for purpose as long as purchased or ordered into the uk and thats with the retailer get them to sort it out.

under section 14 subsection 2 (found on direct gov or just google your local council and give them a ring get transfered to the trading standards they will tell you all you need to do

entitelment:
repair
replacement (like for like)
money back
in that order
you need a recite or proff of purchase (bank statement)
that fails which it wont but if you want to save time take it up with the credit card company and section 75 of the consumer credit act the credit card company owes you protection so anything over the 100 pounds buy it on credit card

much love all

How else are you going to find a relevant thread? Searching for "Teletubbies" on Google?
I picked a random thread that just happened to have a lot of discussion that was relevant.
From a simple search of a few seconds, i found hundreds more.
Next time, research.

right...sony support is probably the worst support i've ever dealt with...since last week i've been trying to fix the ps3 and been on the phone constantly everynight trying to fix it and they keep tell me no..

day 1 - need receipt
day 2 - fax over the original receipt. no receipt received, when they receive it they will call me
day 3 - nothing
day 4 - sir, this receipt is not valid, does not state which model of the ps3 is. we need more detailed receipt (need product name, model number serial number - what the guy on the phone said) as original is not valid enough to be classed as a receipt WTF! asked to speak to manager, was placed in que and would be called back
day 5 - contact mymemory.co.uk asked for more detailed receipt with the details on
day 6 - more detailed receipt recieved, faxed over to sony
day 7 - nothing
day 8 - manger calls saying new detailed receipt is not valid as it has a serial on...i told him ur support guy told me it needs this on...manager said well this is wrong and cannot accept this, i told him wot if i email mymemory.co.uk to take off this serial number, he said that would be changes to the receipt and it would not be a valid receipt then...i was p1ssed at this now..all he offered me was pay 131 pounds and we'll fix...i told him to stick it as i do have a valid receipt but they are just not willing to repair for me...

SCREW YOU SONY!!!!!!
