ps3 60 gb is the better because it had more expensive components but other gb consoles used cheaper components as does ps3 slim theres not much difference though the slim is thinner but not by much its meant to be quieter but again not by much

Ok well I own both the 60gb PS3 and the Slim 120gb so I will just tell you differences IMO. With the 60 version you are getting more bang for your buck. Your getting backwards compatibility so you can play any PS2 games that you own, card readers, two extra USB ports and an overall nicer looking console. They arn't noisy atleast mine isn't but they do run hot which is a bonus in the winter but a pain in the summer.

The Slim runs quiet, very quiet but the Blu-ray drive is cheaper and can be noisy. I know I just said it's quiet but the fans you will never hear and it's only every now and again you will hear the blu-ray drive mostly when it's loading a game. You only get two USB slots and the overall feel of the console is cheap a matt plastic replaces the gloss finish of the previous phat consoles. Also it's always in stand by mode as there is no on-off switch at the back of the console anymore.

The size difference is quiet big the slim is just what it says on the box and is roughly half the height of the phat model but depth it's about the same.

Hope all this has helped and message me if you need any more advice.
thank you both, rep left :)

ok i think ill go for the old one especially as we would only use it seldomly and 50% of the times as a dvd player

what are the best deals out there for the 'old' one?
Not much as the Slim has replaced it best bet is looking out for offers on the 80GB version which sometimes you will find new for £200 but doesn't come with the features the 60gb version does. Have a look on the for sale/trade section some people selling theirs on there.
are you saying that the old 60gb is the best to get?

Just to throw a spanner in the works. The older 60GB version consumes much more power also.,39029441,49303483,00.htm

I'm only up now because I'm getting my data ported from my old 60GB. I have a 120GB slim and have noticed straight away how silent it is. The 60GB makes quite a bit of noise in comparison, especially when hot!
I do much prefer the look of the phat PS3, the slim looks a bit on the cheap side but it is quite a bit slimmer and fits on my AV stand with more space above it than the old system.
I'm in the process of selling my 60gb version didn't use the features and getting £250 for it so picked up a slim sold the games that came with it in the end I'll be paying £70 for the slim. It's just better for me owning the slim as I was paying £5 a month for the continuous play insurance incase the old one got the YLOD again so I'm saving £60 a year there too.

Barbie for your needs I would just pick up a slim as by what you said you would mostly be using it for watching films, if it's in your living room the slim would look better as the phat would take up much more room.

I got in before they shut down Continous play so I'm still part of it they still take the £5 a month so they best still do replacements.

I read that they will be opening a PS2 store and with the God of War collection coming I think that further backs this up. Maybe Sony testing the waters for demand

It depends what you want to do with it - the 60GB model offers PS2 backwards compatibility, four USB ports (rather than two) and onboard card readers. But as also mentioned it consumes more power plus it's been discontinued for a while now so you run the risk of more reliability issues. Personally I'd only go for this model if you're wanting the convenience of playing PS2 games on the console, otherwise I think you're better going for either a cheap 80GB model or the slim.

They shut down continuous play cos people abused it to avoid the £100+ charge to fix the YLOD. I thought you might be collecting them like this guy -

My 60gb used to get noisy after 20 mins or so of playing a game. I rarely used the card reader and I'm done with playing ps2 games. The slim being less power hungry and smaller / lighter is a plus. It looks alright, I'm not too fussed though, as long as it does the job.

I think the slim will be reliable, the original ps3 had a very low failure rate, it's early days to guage reliability of the new model.

Rumour has it that the psn will be selling ps2 games in the future, so maybe bc will come back, a way to make money by reselling games, HD remakes maybe?

Mine used to do that when playing games but more annoying was when trying to watch a blu ray with quiet dialogue. My 60gb was purchased on the day of release and has been going strong since then. I have to admit that I never used the memory card reader until today to transfer my game saves.

I rarely use any PS2 games and still have a PS2 hidden away somewhere. I think they will offer PS2 games for download before too long. I feel a bit more at ease having a PS3 under warranty again. I only got mine today but wanted to get Fifa 10 but my local Sainsburys were out of stock so I'll be on the hunt for another tomorrow.
lol... Wipeout HD is great, what would we do without it.

I think there'll be other deals before Christmas on the slim, worth keeping an eye out. Mine has just finished being updated after more than 6 hours... I'm going to hang on before upgrading the HD, I might wait for a good 1TB to come along!

lol, someone owns a 60gb and is living in denial 'more expensive doesnt = better'

The 60gb are the ones most likely to fail, truth be known the slims are bettter looking, consume less power, have a larger fan, are quieter and are less likely to breakj as the technology keeping them cool is newer and they have learnt from past mistakes (hopefully)

I went from fat to slim and Id never go back !!!
The fury dlc is really good as well, i was surprised - not just a crappy add on - read they are bringing it on blu ray for £20 which is good value

my first wipeout game as well - thank fun for the pilot assist, i used that to help me improve and i'm half decent at it now

hopefully will see some good deals, i need my fix

Its already out on bluray, i saw it in Gamestation the other day.
