Anything to justify this 'toy' to my beautiful lady :)

If connected to a hdtv yellow dog linux runs OK, if you want to play lots of movies you can put in a higher hard drive (or a usb harddrive). Also it is very beneficial to open accounts on American service and japan service for more demos/ trailers, etc.

Got an item number? Thats a bargain!

I would say its worth downloading Ubuntu and sticking it on there, and if you wanted to, why not download QEMU and emulate Windows XP in Ubuntu?

230299755201 Yeah - I collected it. Really nice chap talked about retro games for ages! House stuffed with gadgets!

QEMU runs ok? Is it painfully slow?

windows xp does and will run slow (yellow dog is good for emulating old games, internet, open office and video watching.

Emulating Windows is out of the question as it barely runs Linux as it is.

No hacks worth mentioning.

Ability to install other region's demos / betas has been removed in the latest firmware(s) (not talking about opening another PSN account).

What about running Windows 2000 or Windows 98 (That would surely be very zippy if the old XBOX can run it relitively well)

Depends on what we wants it for, open office is much better than windows word in 98.

The PS3 is a completely different architecture - one that Windows was never designed to run on.

By the way Linux does not have direct access to the PS3 hardware, Sony made sure of that.

The original Xbox is almost a PC in a lot of respects :).

Yep, Microsoft and sony are from friends.

Internet and OpenOffice is all I really want - this is a compromise - SO wanted PC in the living room for her work - this gave me a cheap PC and something to play CoD4 on (5 soon)

You need a usb keyboard, usb mouse, the nessary install files then you will be flying.

Donwloaded the PS3 distro of Ubuntu and just picked up a keyboard and mouse - the system update is taking ages! Going to go and buy CoD4 to play online later :)
