PS3 / Wii shared wired connection query

Hi,

probably an easy one for the techies out there. I have a ps3 on a wired connection and have a wii on the way (ooh err). Is there any way of splitting the cable for them to share the line rather than unplugging each time? they will never be on at the same time and the wired cable goes to a router 25M away shared by my PC.

I do not want wireless BTW.

Any help gratefully received.

thanks.

It can be done, via something such as...

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=22423

Obviously, you can't have both on at the same time.

May be worth noting that in order to have a wired connection on the Wii, you will need to buy an adaptor (as by default, they are wireless).

Just buy another router and change the DHCP address range. then hook up both, or even why not buy a simple 5 port switch and have the PS/3 and wii on DHCP?

Thanks very much for the quick advice guys. Much appreciated. off to google / maplins now. Not sure what the DHCP refers to but thanks again.

how daft that HUKD does not allow this!

buy a very cheap router

Simple switch will do the trick, cheap and no configuration required - might need some slight changes on your PC although if it's just set to share the connection you should be good to go.

You should just use wireless, get a decent ADSL router and you're sorted. Better in the long run too. These USB to Ethernet devices are probably made for 10p using the worst possible chipsets.

On a seperate note, it's annoying the Wii does not have an ethernet socket. I cabled my whole house with Cat6 (3 big floors, a lot of cable!) and it's the only device without ethernet in my repertoire :(

go wireless

slower and not as secure.

its secure if you use the security provided.

and even if it was hacked into all they'd 'steal' is the heavy info going towards the ps3/wii ie... just bandwidth..

no information....

Think you underestimate what people can do with an unsecure network...

Think fraudulent activity under your IP Address.

So, no matter whether they do or do not gain access to your information, they can use it and get you in some deep sh**...

Absolutely agree. Wired is far better.
