PS3 Yellow Light of Death - noooooooo!

It happened to our beloved 60gb after 2 years of living with us. RIP, you will be missed.
I know it's out of warranty at 2 years old but can't believe Sony simply 'offered' us a refurbed 60gb for £145, not even an offer to try and fix ours, which has a hell of a lot of stuff on the hard drive.

Anyone know the best place to try and get the hard drive copied, or wiped, if that can be done at all?

You never bought it from Sony, so you are lucky they offered you that.

If you bought it from a shop, return it under "The Sale Of Goods Act", and get it replaced/repaired.

Noooooooooooooooooooo thats harsh. Id go bow low!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

£145 seems like a fair offer especially as it's a 60GB, Nintendo ask £100 for the DS lites to be replaced if your hinge brakes.
Why don't you try that and sell the old one? or just keep the harddrive and transfer it using a pc or something i'm sure theres a way.

Yellow light due to overheating or hard drive failure, you should be able to do a hard drive replacement. You might be able to save your old data too.

Thanks to everyone. Didnt want to buy the refurbed 60gb for £145 as they couldn't guarantee the fault wouldn't happen again. Serves us right for being smug about the XBox Red Ring of Death!

Replace the hdd with another one there's guides all over the internet its not hard to do.
Alternatively you could sell it to me for £110!! ;o)

just phone up again, using a friends name and address. Say the console is approximately a years old and they'll replace it with a refurbished one for you.

OH is all over the HDD as we speak! And thanks for your offer, I was only just looking at ebay in amazement at how much the faulty ones sell for, nuts.

Sony could learn a thing or two from Microsoft about building reliable consoles.
Maybe they should poach some of the MS hardware design team :whistling:

It was irony or you are a die hard xbox 360 fan (they do have a few of them :whistling:)

Is this common with 60gb models?
#16
i think it is quite common unofrtunately, especially in the 60gb models.

Also, i wouldn't call up and say you have had it less than a year or whatever because now they ask for proof of purchase.

What i would do is sign up to continuousplay.co.uk
wait a few days for the stuff to come through (the insurance number)
then call sony and say its developed a fault and say you have a continuous play plan
they will replace soon (its meant to be within 2 working days but longer for 60gb PS3's.)

And the reason they sell for so much on ebay is because people know the above and hence buy faulty ones, claim and sell them on or get themselves a lovely ps3 for £100 instead of £250 or whatever it is.

Only heard of these problems with th 60gb models.

40gb's and 80gbs have their share of problems too but it seems only the 60gb overheats and has hard YLOD (and hard drive issues apparently)

I have a 20gig american ps3 that came up with the yellow light thing. It was replaced by my house insurance but I still have the old one. Would there be a way of doing the above recomendations for the same result?? I dont need a second machine to be honest but it might be worth having a go if it means i can sell it. Or someone could buy on here if thats allowed??;-)
