wtf? have u even read the article?

a six-digit password has nearly 282 trillion possible permutations, and the networked PS3 can attempt 4 million guesses per second.

Impressive.

All though guess and sony can realise we want cross-game voice chat and in-game music.....:p

Yes only problem is by they time they get anywhere, i have no doubt they would of changed the password, and they would have to start again.

As 282 trillion is one hell of a number.

How could they change the password of a computer sat in a police station?

Eh?

I thought they were attempting to hack the passwords of child pornography sites?

Not the other way around, so why would the password be at the police station?

Passwords of PC's they have, it says on it they have the power to confisgate the PCs but not to make the person reveal the password.

+1

But still must take them ages unless they have loads of PS3's, like upto 27 months!

Notice it says they have 20, so still could be upto 41 days.

Ah just full read the article, as i thought they were attempting to hack into a remote server.

Anyway sounds like more sony hype to me.

In the UK you can be convicted if you don't reveal your password http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/08/11/ripa_iii_figures/
In the US you are protected by the fifth amendment to the constitution.

Not really seeing as though Sony blocked it with the PS3 Slim.

Blocked what? the use of linux

I'm assuming it's just the main cell processor doing the work?

If so i would of thought it would be easily interfaced around, which I'm sure Sony are more than happy to help with. Lets face it the basic architecture is the same.

All the hype sells consoles.

Same as toy story style graphics on the ps2, Ps2 chips used in missiles and numerous others about the ps3.

of course if it's a 7 digit password then the number of possibilities is multiplied i believe exponentially

theres roumors of cross game chat, an uncharted 2 member of staff said:

quote: "Not to mention that the next ps3 firmware update is going to allow cross game chat"

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/14/rumor-ps3-cross-game-chat-in-next-firmware-update/

as its sony, they might be a while but when it does release it will be good.

personally id like to speak to people playing the same game as me, in the same game lobby infact.

as for in-game music, that depends if the game developers want to allow it..........and theres another ton of copyright's associated with it.

as far as i know, motorstorm arctic edge on PSP has it so i wouldnt be surprised if it came along to PS3.........then theres technical issues such as your mp3's have to be 256kb/sec and 44.1khz.

EDIT: id also like to add that theres already legal cases against sony and other companies about game chat so wouldnt be surprised if cross game chat doesnt come out like ReklissAbandon claimed.

I wonder if they can break a two layer truecrypt?
Also although in the UK we have to give up the passwords they wouldn't know if a second layer did indeed exist and to some a 5 year sentence is worth not giving up their *info*. However as shown on dateline these people are really stupid.

Although you can be compelled to give up your password, afaik they have no legal recourse if you have "forgotten it". so big security tip is to use a real password for encrpytion, not finger prints, iris scans etc.

and if you're using a decent length pass phrase inculding non dictionary words and symbols, for an AES256 encypted file, it will never be brute forced. we've calculated that even if we could build computers to do it in a person's lifetime they would require more power than like can be generated by every nuclear power plant on earth.
