Due to the downtime of PSN over Christmas, Sony have announced that they will be making it up to us in the following ways:

We wanted to show our appreciation for your patience by offering all PlayStation Plus members that had an active membership or free trial on December 25th a membership extension of five days.

In addition, sometime this month we will announce that for a limited time, we will be offering a 10 percent discount code good for a one-time discount off a total cart purchase in the PlayStation Store as a thank you to ALL PSN members.

Not exactly a deal, but more just a heads up!!

The post on the PS Blog is here: http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2015/01/01/holiday-thank-you/

When it was hacked back in 2011 Sony gave away free games! Now it's only a 10% discount! No thanks.

You're not entitled to *anything* here. Remember that in 2011 the downtime was actually due to a hack (i.e., a security flaw, that *was* Sony's fault to at least some extent) rather than a DDoS attack (which there's only a limited amount that you can do against) and lasted for over a month, rather than just a few days.

Oh, and in other good news: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/jan/01/man-linked-to-lizard-squad-hack-arrested-over-2013-14-cyber-fraud

Man 'linked to Lizard Squad hack' arrested over 2013-14 cyber-fraud

Twickenham man arrested in raid on his home over allegations relating to funds stolen from PayPal accounts

A 22-year-old man arrested by police investigating cyber-fraud offences in 2013-14 has been linked to the Lizard Squad hacking group thought to be behind the attacks on Sony’s PlayStation Network and Microsoft’s Xbox Live gaming services over Christmas.

The unnamed man from Twickenham was arrested in a raid on his home by the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU) before being released on bail.

“The arrest is in connection with an ongoing investigation into cyber-fraud offences which took place between 2013 and August 2014 during which victims reported funds being stolen from their PayPal accounts,” Thames Valley police said in a statement on behalf of SEROCU.

The two situations are different. This one lasted a few days, the previous one was a tad more serious. Millions of people having their data stolen, and the service was down far, far longer (a month or something like that).

This time they weren't hacked, they were just the victim of a DDOS attack. I wasn't expecting much, if anything in the way of compensation, so it's a decent gesture by Sony imo.

I know what you're all saying but how many people had PS4's on Christmas day and weren't able to go online. I'm trying to say that it the most popular day of the year for gaming online.

I personally think it's a poor effort in reflection to the timing of the situation, but thats probably just me.
#17
Days back that we lost due to there poor security floors... And 10% off there over priced games you **** kidding me? This is nothing more than a sales effort not an apology!
#18
Can't please some people, it would seem.

Lizard squad didn't actually spoil christmas Sony and Xbox did reason
1. Poor security 3 bedroom surfers beat the 2 largest online game sites which take millions off the public every year
2. Xbox and Sony turned kids into zombies at least kids had to speak to the parents for once

Ok I know a lot of parents were mad at the fact they got these gifts for try kids they can't use but come one how's times your bought a toy and forgot try batteries it's not the end of the world

They didn't need to do this at all but it's a nice gesture. Thank you Sony :)

I dont think ppl with new PS4s were able to set them up to even use the single player.

This isn't so much a security issue - there's a limited amount that you can do to protect against a DDoS attack.

They wouldn't have been because the same thing happened to me on PS4 launch day.

Does anyone know how long the 10% GWG discount will last?

Thanks for the 10% discount... after I've just bought all my Christmas gaming crap >:(

If this is one of your comments out of only 11 that you've made in just under a year then please refrain from posting.

1. Incorrect. Look up what DDoS is.
2. Irrelevant

How many times does this have to get repeated.

That is my intention, brings the PS+ sub down to about £30 (if you use a well known site which I cannot mention here)

The discount can be used towards great content available on PS Store including blockbuster new releases, award winning indie games, game add-ons and season passes, and an enormous selection of TV and Movies.

That's not really conclusive for your question, but I'd personally suspect not.

It's great to see people complaining about getting something for free which was pretty much out of Sony's control.
They didn't have to give us anything in this instance so I'd say be grateful rather than throwing back in their faces.

And please for the love of god, I wish people would look up the difference between a DDoS attack and a hack, because they're most certainly not the same thing!

I have mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, they don't have to give anything, and the hack wasn't their fault.
On the other hand, Sony were slower at dealing with it than Xbox, and the communication was rubbish at the time.
Also, if they're going to give anything, I think it's a bit cheeky to encourage you to buy something from their store, most of which is at least 10% overpriced anyway.

Would it not be a discount code on the ps store itself? Rather than a code which could be used on CD Keys. You would have to buy credit then redeem ps+ on PS store.

Yes I think it will be a discount code that you use on the PS store.
What I was thinking was buy £35 from cdk (someone or other) and then buy off the store for £36 (PS price - 10%).
