What?Digital Downloads & Memory Card 'Cartridges' = GamingTrophies = Gaming3G = GamingFriends List = GamingMicrophone = GamingStreaming = GamingI don't get where your non-gaming features come from?

Well yes, anyone can say any arbitrary term = gaming as can I such as Fish = gaming. It doesn't mean fish are any good for gaming though just like 3G isn't (unless you like erratic latency and low bandwidth) nor are many of the other features. One of the main advantages of a portable console is the physical controls compared to a mobile phone so adding lots of touch controls isn't a particular bonus for gaming nor is multiple cameras. Having a device that replicates most of the functions of my phone is of little interest and frankly a waste of money, the reason I want a portable games console is for gaming, not lots of pointless gimmicks with questionable benefit for gaming.

Rip off if its anything over £250. Even then these portable consoles are rip offs.

169mm x 71mm x 19mm =psp lite
182mm x 83.5mm x 18.6mm =ngp
source: ign and wiki
ngp is 1.240 the total dimensions of psp lite (roughly 25% larger in terms of volume)

im kinda surprised at this, if we are looking at the depth bit where it is claimed that it is just as thin (well thinner, but 0.4mm, noone is gonna notice that) as the psp lite. by the pics, it certainly looked as fat as the psp 1000. It is taller and longer by a significant margin, but thats to accomodate the larger screen which is understandable. Just need to see its weight so then i can now imagine having this on my hand :P

What would be an extremely cool feature, now that the Playstation portable has a 960 x 544 resolution screen and dual analogue sticks, would be the ability to use remote play, to actually play your (installed or the one disc that happens to be in your console) PS3 titles from anywhere, (assuming the 3G connection can handle the video feed), as the 'NGP' has (probably) all the controller inputs that your DUALSHOCK 3 or SIXAXIS contollers do.

At this point the keen-eyed among you will be crying: "Wait, what about the analogue R2 and L2 buttons?" and this is where I point out that the touchpad on the back could be used to simulate the analogue effect of R2 and L2 button by pressing and then sliding your finger down the back.

(Whether the analogue sticks have clickable R3 and L3 buttons though is a different kettle of fish.)

Josh

Errr... "Remote Play" from a PSP console to a PS3 console does that already (but you map the second analogue stick to the handheld device buttons) or connect a SIXAXIS or DUALSHOCK(r)3 controller via Bluetooth (if using the PSPgo).

[EDIT]: My Sony VAIO laptop also supports "Remote Play" but does not allow the playing of games; just viewing of video, playing of audio, & navigation of the XrossMediaBar [/EDIT]

Really, my PSPs have never allowed me to do that (although I haven't used Remote Play for probably around a year). Whenever I've tried to play a PS3 game it tells me that action is unavailable through Remote Play. Has that changed in an update over the past year?

It's always allowed me to play PSOne and minis whilst using Remote Play as well sac using the PlayTV feature, but never actual Playstation 3 Games. :o

I might go and try it now!

Josh

Not all PS3 titles support "Remote Play".

I posted a list in another thread recently... let me find it & re-post here.

Or even better, watch tv on the psp if you have PlayTV! :)

...or play games installed on your PS3's hard drive, or Blu-ray Disc supplied titles, that support "Remote Play".

Such as, but not limited to...

"Bejeweled 2"
"Bionic Commando Rearmed"
"BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger"
"Gundemonium Recollection"
"High Stakes on the Vegas Strip: Poker Edition"
"Lair"
"LEGO Batman"
"Peggle" / "Peggle Nights"
"PixelJunk Eden"
"PixelJunk Monsters"
"PixelJunk Shooter"
"VidZone"
"Zuma"

& (original) PlayStation 1 titles.

"LAIR" was (in)famous for being the first. The game on the "big screen" wasn't great, but on the small screen it definitely lost something because of the lack of interaction with the SIXAXIS controller...

...but that is about to change! :)

PS. A thought occurred to me this afternoon... how long before you can play "NGP" titles with PlayStation(r)Move controllers? Or maybe this wouldn't work because the screen would have to be suspended somehow.

Or... how about strapping the "NGP" to the barrel of the PlayStation(r)Move "Sharp Shooter" whilst playing "Killzone 3"?

I found an article a couple of years ago about a gamer that had attached a screen to a gun to play "Counter Strike" so he could move around in physical space & the movements he was making corresponding to movements in the game.

The technology was due to go into mass production, but nothing ever came of it (as far as I know).

...or how about used as a rear view mirror as was demonstrated being used with "Formula One: Championship Edition" on a PS3 at the 2006 Tokyo Game Show?

Yes, that was shown... no that didn't actually come to market :(

Yeah, I remember that feature that never came to fruition. Those kind of features never really take off. It was the same with the Gamecube/GameBoy Advance Link Cable, I never once saw (or even heard about) anyone actually using one.

My kids had moved onto GameBoy Advance SP consoles when I bought a GameCube (to play "Donkey Konga") so I then got a GameBoy Player unit instead. Still in use today (in our kitchen).

"Donkey Kong Jungle Beat" certainly needs three hands to play properly. Otherwise you end up with egg on your face,

PS. Mario is one of my least favourite characters... ever. In fact, anything Nintendo character-related. Probably a few exceptions, but in general they all annoy me.

I bet you wish you were Mario here:

I find Luigi to be the most irritating Nintendo character ..ever. Luigi's Mansion had to be played with the volume off, I couldn't stand his whiney little voice.

Josh

P.S Bonus points if you can name the game Mario & Luigi are pictured in and extra Bonus points if you can tell me the name of the level :)

Are you a troll or what?

Everything I listed relates to gaming in terms of the PSP NGP. True it has many functions of a phone but so does other handhelds, and if anything it will probably improve the overall console experience.

3G - online gaming in most places? This definitely relates to gaming.
Digital Downloads - downloading games on the go or if you don't like physical media. Gaming.
Apply the above examples to the other ones I provided.

A camera exists on the DSi so it is definitely not a new thing added by Sony. Whose to say they won't create a game that requires the camera? Many already exist. Also, what if you need to take a picture to upload to a PSN profile? A camera would come in handy then.

Touch controls - they may not be you personal preference but who are you to say that they won't work? They may be used to replicate the L2+R2 buttons of the PS3 controller on ported games.

These things aren't exactly new and have been around for a while. Imagine if Sony didn't add them - so many people would complain that they haven't tried at creating a solid handheld. At least they're adding it all in from the start instead of creating a load of different models like both they and Nintendo have done in the past.

Like "EyePet" for the PSP, or either of the two titles in the "Invizimals" franchise (so far).

Its just like a mobile phone only without the phone capability and there are already enouth handhelds like this on the market

that is why the 3ds will sell where this will fail. it has 3d which is something different

Why do you think 3D support is needed in a handheld device?

I'm going to write to Sony now and tell them they've missed a trick not employing you as the head of their market research department...

I don't think that you will ever see a phone with proper analogue sticks for a start. Also, due to the size, thhe NGP would be completely impractical as a phone, hence not incorporating telephone capabilities into the console. Let's not forget that the PSP was and is a successful console and that lacked many features that the NGP is going to include.

Also, when has a console ever really been sold on gimmicks? At the end of the day it is the developer support that makes or breaks a console, handheld or otherwise. I'm sure that Sony have learnt from their failing to attract (and keep) developers to their PSP Console and are seeking to rectify this, as can be seen from the tech demos of Uncharted, Killzone etc.

I agree, I will probably buy one at launch anyway, because I am a fan of Sony's gaming products, but the price-point needs to be right. Anything over £249 is going to put a lot of people off.

I agree with that price point, I cant see myself willing to pay any more than that. Graphics look brilliant on it, ps3 standard in a handheld device, sounds pretty special to me! Combined with the online play, I think sony might have this right this time.
