No handheld games console is seriously robust, infact i would say that the DS is more robust than the psp, due to the fact that the psp has moving parts, more likely to get broken. However, if you do buy a psp for your son, you could sign upto continuous play for £2.49 a month, and if something happens to it you can get it replace.

How about getting a one of these to protect it....

I think the PSP is less robust due to its external screen.

I have the original Phat PSP, it has a loop hole at the bottom left hand corner. Couldn't you fasten a strap to that so he can carry it around his neck? That way if he's to let go, it won't drop to the floor?

Not sure if the newer slim versions still have this...??

Nintendo DS is more appropiate than PSP. I would also say a DS original over a DS Lite, the Lite is way more flimsy, probably have to buy second hand.

you can get all sorts of cases for the psp;not sure about the ds. i had a plastic and a rubber one, ive dropped mine loads and it works fine. i think the psp is more robust, no hinges for the screen and its not as easy to lose the games and cards which my littler brother and sister do constantly with the micro sd.

theres plenty of cases there. like someone else has said, attach a neck or wrist strap to it would be a good idea.

That's not a bad idea actually: if he just wants a handheld get him an original Gameboy - they're nigh on indestructible. Dropped it out of my bedroom window onto the pavement, still worked a charm. Also, the GBA and GBA SP are tougher than current handhelds, and cheap games galore. In fact the GBA could be bought for £1 second-hand at GAME (not sure about availability), so it's worth having one regardless.

Between the PSP and DS, just echoing what others have said. Both are easily damaged (PSP due to external screen, DS screens and lite can be easily snapped and would often be used with stylus). Invest in a case and protection for either. Out of the two I believe that the DS would be more durable as it can fold shut, especially the original which is bulkier and not the Lite version.

You can buy both hard plastic and soft silicon cases to protect the DS, and face-plates to protect the PSP screen from DealExtreme.

would it not be better to get him a console you play on the tv, non portable so to speak?
