I am trying to update my son's PSP, I have done this before for my other son with no problems.

I keep getting the following message

"The disc could not be read
If you cancel, you may not be able to start the PSP system
Check that the disc is correctly inserted and then press the x button
(FFFFFFFF)"

I have googled and while I am no expert by any means I keep coming across the answer that it may be "bricked"

Can I sort this out in anyway?

Help please :-(

can you get to the psp's "dashboard", also I believe all models can be unbricked, not to sure on the psp 3000's method of doing so though

You can update it on the Sony website by downloading the latest one.

If you have Custom firmware, what firmware version are you on?

How do I check for what either of you have asked :-(

It's not a PSP 3000 because it's the old PSP but is the person you purchased the PSP from around, maybe you can ask him, which you can findout via your for sale history.
#9
FH, what are you trying to do/what is theproblem?
#10
I know when that normally happens on the xbox 360, the console is trying to do an update on the firmware, is this the case?

He wanted to play a new game and it said it needed an update. When I started the update with the game disc I got the message in my first post. I am scared if I cancel the update it won't work. IS that the case??

I'm not sure if this happens on the PSP but if you have a modded 360 and you insert a new game, it sometimes asks you if you want to update, which is the companies way to stop people from pirating games.

Try it with one of his old games that worked before and see if the same happens.

Just cancel the update, has it got custom firmware on it(does he have the ability to play games from the memory stick?)?

If it's the one she bought from here (which she said it was) that one shows that it's capable of playing games off the memory stick (homebrew).

Does that mean she can't update it because it has custom firmware?
I know with the 360, you can't update it until a new patch is released but I don't know if this is the case for the PSP as well.

It was from this seller, right?

She can update it, but if she is trying to do it from a game UMD that has an update, she will lose the ability to play games from the memory stick, as Sony's firmwarewill be installed.

Sorry for referring to you as "She" FH.

To update, and keep custom firmware, you can download an update file.
Dependant on your firmware version, you can also do it wirelessly over the net.

I don't have access to my bookmarks, as I am in Rio atm, so can't help you out with a link.

You said
I keep getting the following message

If you have aleady cancelled previously, then you can do it again.

If you cancel, and it bricks, you need to borrow a Pandora's battery. If you get it to accept, you need to borrow a Pandora's battery to reinstall the custom firmware.

If it cancels, and it doesn't brick, you need to do what I suggested earlier to update it.

I meant I keep getting the message when I try a different disc as it says check the disc and try again so I swopped to another game.

Ok so it seems I am gonna have to cancel and see what happens
#19
I spoke to a friend and he seems to think that if you update it, it'll brick (which means the PSP will no longer work in any shape or form).
He said the Pandoras battery is supposed to repair the PSP if it becomes bricked but he couldn't do it with his one but he said you might need to take a risk and cancel the update and take out the game.
If it still works, make sure you don't insert any new games and just update your firmware.

Wait for confirmation from other members to see if this is the best thing to do before you try anything like this though. :)

Oh, if that's what happens when you try older games that used to work as well, it sounds like this is Sonys way of forcing you to update, so you can't use homebrew anymore.

I think it means you won't be able to play anything other than homebrew on the PSP from now on, so make sure you're careful in the future, if you can get away with cancelling it. :)

I just deleted it from my post after seeing your response, so I suggest you edit the quote to get rid of the link.

How can a trojan come from that...it's a proper forum for psp homebrew that a friend recommended? :?

It's at the top of the search engines as well.

Are you sure you weren't checking anything else, as I've been on there and haven't received any warnings or anything? :?

You need to PM RFM or report the post, as your post comes after his, so your warning would be too late.

I dunno but other than here I was only on there when my virus scanner found it - I have got rid anyway

Has there been any updates/progress FH?

EDIT: Excellent news about getting rid of the virus, sorry about that...my friend said it was a big site for homebrew and loads of other stuff, so I'm very surprised to hear there was a virus on the link.

No worries, just going contemplating what to do while I go and rescue my washing from all over the floor cos my washing line has just snapped with a full load on it

I'm sorry, but that actually made me laugh. :giggle:

Ok, when you come back, I suggest cancelling the update and just try playing homebrew games only, so if you want to play any new games, you're just going to have to download them.
#28
My friend reckons the easiest way possible is to cancel the update, connect to the net on the psp, go on options and update firmware.

That's it, then it'll just update. :)

I turned it off - turned it on and IT WORKS :-D :-D :-D

Thanks everyone

Yey! :)

Did you update the firmware?

Do I get a prize for helping? :whistling:

Only just spotted this thread, if you still cant do the update that it is asking for, go to network update (provided it is on custom firmware 3.73 or higher) and it will automatically download the very latest custom firmware and install it for you, after that you should be able to run the game you are wanting to play.

lol, you thanked everyone but me...don't I deserve anything for being your knight in shining armour? :whistling:

P.S do what we're advising...it'll allow it to work and for the love of god....if you're gonna have a psp with copied games....play F*****g copied games on it...don't spend more than you need to! :giggle:
