There are 4 models

PSP
PSP slim and light
PSP 3000
PSP GO

Yes they can play movies. You can buy UMDS for them from shops which are like dvds for the psp console. You can pick them up very cheap now. I would go for the Slim or 3000

Just to confuse you further, the PSP-1000 series (the original model) is probably very hard to find for sale now (if at all).

The PSP-2000 series & the PSP-3000 series are both labelled "Slim & Lite" on the exterior packaging (look for the reference PSP-2003 or PSP-3003 [the last digit means a model intended for the UK market]).

The PSP-3000 was dubbed the "Slim & Brite" (as opposed to the "Slim & Lite") because the screen brightness was improved.

All of the above models can play digital media (music &/or video files) from memory sticks (either included in the package, or available separately).

As shergold mentioned, optical media is available in the form of Universal Media Discs [UMDs]. These may be played within the console's on-board drive. The games & movies available for the PSP (1000, 2000, & 3000 series) are on UMD.

The PSPgo is a digital-only device & does not have an optical device drive at all.

Every PSP can connect to use the PlayStation Store (via PlayStation Network) for zero cost. Demos of games can be downloaded & games/movies can be purchased for download directly to the memory stick or internal memory of the PSPgo.

As present, there is an offer available on PSPgo models (both new & pre-owned; as long as nobody has used the device to create a new, or access a previously existing, PlayStation Network account).

FYI: Ten free games offer for PSP Go console

I've tried not to dump a load of information in one comment that may confuse more than it helps... please ask questions as needed.

Pick up the older models and hack the hell out of it. You'll be able to play any video you want then without being restricted to the hideous UMD format. You can get all the emulators to play older games for free and seeing as we're talking about getting games for free, you can get the new ones too.

Don't do it - they are really really really over rated and over priced. Spend your money on an xbox or something sure he would probably appreciate that more. Cheaper and probably has a longer life cycle.

Only you were talking about piracy or "getting games for free".

OMG I am seriously confused. Which is the most recent one that will play the Simpsons on lol???

I would say the best at the moment is the PSP Go, as you get 10 free decent games with it, worth a lot of money.
But only if the PSP Go is around £150 or less then i would buy it.

lolzer - can get them for £40 - £50 second hand

brilliant piece of kit - to compare it to an xbox is quite frankly, absurd in the extreme

The £4.99 (Amazon.co.uk price) Universal Media Disc of "The Simpsons Movie" can be played on the PSP-3000 "Slim & Lite" (or "Slim & Brite") model.

You may still buy either of these two items for £174.85 from ShopTo.net:

Sony PSP Go Console - White with £20 PSN Card
or
Sony PSP Go Console - Black with £20 PSN Card

Hmm i would say a logical option to get the price lower for the console would be to sell the PSN card, but then it still wouldn't be £150 or less.
I think the 10 free game offer ends sometime in September right? That may be enough time for a quick price drop :)
