So the request to join the PTA letter has been circulated again and im thinking of going along. they ask ppl to nominate for each position (as most parents are yr 6 parents so kids are leaving).

can u join the PTA or do you have to be nominated. i dont think any of the other mums i talk to are intrested in it .... (sorta left it to the parents that were doing it...but obviously need fresh blood now that they cant do it anymore with their kids leaving).

the positions are chairman, treasure, committee member, gen sect and a few others..... easiest one there looks like the website coordinator or the secretary..... but dont wana be a div and nominate myself and everyone is like who the fudge are u?!

is it best to convince my friends to come along ...or do some ppl go on their own? got ZERO clue!!

yeah there is defo a yr 6 clique...cant wait to get rid..they run the school walking bus and are like eco warriors! really weird...but tba i stand waiting for my son in a different place to them ...we got our own group but its just not something theyd wana do....they only meet 6 times a yr and i got a 7 yr old a 4 yr old and a 1yr old all to go through the school so why not hey?

i think i better rope some of the mums in ..... doubt they will be intrested! so if i turn up like a lost lamb then i better be ready to be mocked :p

If its your first time at this take it slow and see how it works first.
Chairman is best being somebody who has been on the committee for a few years, that's because they need to have an idea of what's involved in the organising of events and stuff.
Secretary is a busy position, at the very least they are required to get the minutes of meetings out promptly plus other admin, suggest you avoid as a first job.
If you have the skills for web sec that put yourself up for it, also consider being just a committee member at first to learn the ropes.
The most important thing is enthusiasm and commitment, everybody loves a willing volunteer, also you will get an insight into how a school really works and your children will be chuffed to see you involved. Good Luck

I think you should go for it magicbeans, whichever one you fancy. 3 children going through the school you definitely qualify. My cousin did this when her kids were in primary, you need to be tough, but it's good to have a say. ;)

As I remember you need to be nominated for any post, sounds as if it's time for a change in your school. :) I think you write a resume to let them know what you're good at etc,

the letter has a form at the back all u say is i wish to nominate for (circle the position) for election at AGM on 17-2-11.....Damn im out on the 18th.... 2 nights out for me (even if one is a PTA AGM!)

so u think i should circle the commitee member...seems a lot of work with my little one being 1 i might go for website coordinator..... they say all u need to do is be able to use emails and update their website...plus they give u technical help.... easier to do then when she is older can really muck in????

promise everyone every thing - become chairperson - then break whatever promise you want.

oh wait, that's a politicians job

You should go for what you fancy doing, I don't think being a committee member would be more time consuming than coordinating the website. You would get to vote on stuff happening in the school as a committee member. Isn't that what you want? To have some influence?

Why don't you ask one of the current committee? They will probably be delighted that someone wants to join ... we welcome people with open arms and tears of gratitude that they have bothered to turn up at ours! (Ours is a small school & PTA though)

Website co-ordinator sounds the easiest and if all the current committee are leaving then it sounds like all the roles will need to be filled, you would then have dibs on the best one!

I would definitely drag a friend along with you if you don't really know the people on the committee, especially as they have been doing it forever from the sound of it. Anything you don't understand, just ask a question eg. if they are arranging stuff and they aren't explaining what they are doing.

Do you know what events they have? We do a Christmas Fair, Christmas Party, Chocolate Bingo, Summer Fair and a couple of school discos too.

the committee member desc is:

think up new fundraising ideas, organise raffel and grand draws, shop for events, coordinate volunteers for summer fete, xmas fayre and parties, sort all donations for summer and xmas events, write updates and newsletters to parents/teachers, sourcea and decorate event venues, coordinate junior xmas cards print and distributuin and support school by providing refreshmens at open days and sporting events.....crikey! id love to do that but i know with the one yr old i wouldnt be able to give it 100%.....

website coordinatoor is basically updating the site..... easy and doable around the lil un.

secretary - takes notes at meetings...sounds a doddle as well

but its out of the first 2.

thanks will tk someone and maybe speak to one of the pta scary mums!

Hi MB, I am on the PTA for my sons school and basically do the first in your list, the stuff like raffles, fundraising etc etc, official title is events organiser haha. Think they only took me on because I have access to loads of freebie paper, craft, printing etc etc.

If you do the website one, you will basically be a committee member doing a bit of everything, but with reponsibility for the website too ... you won't end up doing everything on the list! Just a bit of everything. For example at our PTA, one Mum who has little ones always wraps some of the presents for Santas grotto as it is something you can do in the evening at home ...

If you don't mind going up to people you don't know & twisting their arms, you would also be really good at getting parent volunteers to man stalls at the fairs / donate stuff

As you use this site, you will also be invaluable for sourcing cheap prizes / items for the fairs as you will see all the bargains listed on here! This is something I do for mine as eg. you get to see when the Wilkos 75% off sales start so you can be there to snap up stuff!

If you have enough people on the PTA everyone can just do whichever bit to help they prefer and then it all comes together, but really any help you can give is better than no help at all!

Some of the parents on the PTA at my littluns School were quite good, some were there because they thought it made them important and some of them seem to gang up on those not in their little gang.

I distanced myself from them when I was a Governor. In fact the PTA got disbanded and they ended with a "Friends of.... " committee instead. (Not sure what the difference was tbh - apart from the head giving a bitch slap!)

I always thought you were supposed to work together in a school, not distance yourself?
Anyway, from what I know of you, magicbeans, I have every confidence you will do really well at this ;). Good luck, let everyone know what you decide on. :)

That would be a fair thing to say under normal working circumstances. But when people in these positions act like school kids, I'd tend to disagree and I had zero wish to get involved in their petty squabbles.

I get the impression you think my remark was a slight towards the OP. It wasn't. I was merely speaking of personal experience.

All I know of the PTA in this village school, is they all drive new 4x4's (badly) wear hunter wellies and I am sure they swap keys at meetings.

I chickened out of these things altogether, as you say three children don't leave you with much spare time. ;) I wish now I had been a little more involved with their schools in general, probably because of the clique aspect. I would have enjoyed being a maverick in the PTA 8)

No guv I didn't think you were making any comment about the op. Probably my second comment should have gone in a separate post. After all how could your opinion of your schools PTA have anything to do with magicbeans ability? :| Shame you had that situation though, they are there to support the school and the governors.

Go for governor ( voluntary although you could claim expenses I seem to recall - no-one much does though) straight away. It's a more direct involvement in the way the school actually functions. Or do both!
Go on MB - get involved, you'd be really good. :D
