Purchases from Play.com

I purchased a small item on Play.com last November at £4. I have just recieved my bank statement for this month and to my surprise Play.com had taken £93 from my account for purchases made on the 13th of this month. When i logged onto Play to check what was purchased i found my account to be closed.

I phoned and was told that fraud had been detected on my account and it had been closed on the 15th of this month. They told me that 2 mps players and a dvd player had been bought using my details and posted to another address but they could not give me anymore details as it was now a police matter.

What i want to know is why did they not phone and tell me that someone had hacked into my account and had my details? Also if you make a purchase from Play.com do they send you an email about what you have just purchased and when this will be delivered like amazon does?
 Not impressed with there customer service to say the least.

Im also a bit concerned that Play.com is not as sercure as i thought.

If someone managed to hack your account likelihood is that they would have changed your details.
You would never have got those emails.
Play.com on their part would have just assumed it was a change of address, tel. no etc etc.

Quite why they haven't conatacted you since the 15th I don't know. Did you ask them why?

I did ask why they had not phoned as this was a very serious matter and was told that an email was sent out on the 15th of Jan. An email that i never recieved. After asking that i was told that they could not give me anymore details about the account as it now in police hands.

And of course you wouldn't have received it if the details had been changed.
This just doesn't stack up to me. Play.com customer services are usually pretty good. Surely they at the least should provide you with a crime number ?

Personally I would be contacting my Bank/Credit Card provider immediately and advising them of the situation and asking them what you should do.

If you can check your details online I would do that immediately and make sure there are no transactions you don't know about.

If you use the same account passwords on Play.com as you do elsewhere on the net change them immediately.

Do you run all the vital virus and spyware software on your computer ?

I take it you have had no contact from the police ? If not I think I would be down the police station with the facts.

If you don't/didn't you need to do this right now.

Totally agree.

You can scan your computer for free, here:

Some of the more techy minded HUKD members will give you better links and advice if my link is not the most suitable.

You may want to keep or print the results of any scan if it shows up any baddies just in case you need hard evidence.

I have got 2 anti virus programs running and a spyware program going aswell. I phoned and cancelled the credit card right away and also phoned the local police station and informed them. The police has already been to the house and took all details about what has happened. They now have to get in touch with Play.com to get the details of how this all happened.

I have also had to change all my passwords to all accounts i have. A real pain in the ass as this is the 2nd time in 6 months that i've had my card details stolen. Last time was caught very quickly by the credit card fraud department as whoever stole the details checked by making a purchase of 1p to see if the card was live then went and bought 20 phone cards with it.:x

Im just annoyed that no one phoned to let me know that my account had been closed due to fraud being detected. I had to phone them to see what was going on after i had recieved my bank statement on the 27th on Jan.

Like I wrote before mate, if whoever hacked your account changed all your details Play.com might not have had your original details to hand or may have backed off contacting you for security reasons or police advice.

That would set serious alarm bells ringing for me. Once is bad, twice is incredibly unlucky. Are you positive somewhere along the line you don't have a security problem ?
Might be worthwhile doing a complete security audit and I would have thought your local crime prevention officer could help you.
You don't want too many more problems before the banks/credit card people start getting funny with you.

Hope it all goes well for you.

But surely if fraud is detected they should phone the person that had the account in the 1st place. When i phoned i asked if they had phone number and they said yes.

But anywho, thank you all for very much your help. Its much appreciated.

Lets hope this gets resolved fast and for the people that done it, lets hope they get whats coming to them at some stage in there scum lives.
