Q: Can separate files be converted into an ISO image? [ SORTED! ]

Theoretically speaking of course, if someone were to download a backup copy of a Wii game and it arrives as a collection of files with extensions R00, R01, R02, etc., (and no ISO image), is there a way of patching these files together to make an ISO? Or are they just junk? And why do some downloads arrive with an ISO image and others don't..?

(p.s. It is July, so posting 'Liddle, you are a chocolate banana' will not result in a £10 prize).

Good to see you back. How did the coursework go.

Sorry I know nothing about ISOs.

No, they are Winrar segment files, unzip them, probably an ISO inside

the files a rar files, which means they are compressed and put into smaller packages you need something like winrar www.rarlabs.com once extracted these files will be the .iso which you are after this is the direct link to a free trial: http://www.rarlabs.com/rar/wrar371.exe although once you have installed this your "theoretical friend" can then get a full version from the place he/she got thge wii backup from or from similar sites:thumbsup:. The killer is that if you download some winrar torrents they are compressed using winrar, and you need winrar to decompress - see the problem there? wiser ones use winzip though!

R00, R01, R02 are rar files, unpack with Winrar, and theoretically speaking you're a theif!

7-Zip gives the message "~iso is broken"

Was this via torrents or usenet your "friend" used?
If usenet there are usually par files which contain information to repair damaged rar's although winrar has a repair function too, it depends if the packed the repair info into it.

You need HJ Split to join them??? Are the files 001,002?

Download winrar it has a free trial

Then all of your segments will tun into what looks like a stack of books, open up any one of them and itwill show you whats contained within the rar archive

Choose whatever file you want then extract it to the desktop

aha! Problem solved I think. My 'friend' has now noticed that one of the files has a rar extension - and he has just told me that this is being unpacked as we speak. Bit slow, my friend, but his failure to notice the details is cute

EDIT: The problem, he tells me, is that the rar file usually comes alone or with a couple of other files. This time it came with more than 90 others so remained 'hidden' for a while...

Well done liddle ol' me for sussing it for your "friend" :giggle:
Rars and pars can get confusing at times!
Your Friend should look into newsgroups, with mind speeds are 5 x faster on downloading and they are more reliable, with torrents you are relying on a host of other people having the parts with newsgroups they are all there ready, if a file happens to be damaged the parts are there to repair it, plus with altbinz as the client you can set it so it repairs (if needed) extracts and then deletes the un-needed rars once they are done, so you can set it and forget it, also you arent uploading and there are no ratio's to worry about or the risk (however slight) of being done for file sharing as you arent because you are simply downloading only! I still use torrents for the odd small application as they are not all available via newsgroups!

Great info harlzter. My friend thanks you much. Can you give me a link to a reliable newsgroup I can join (that is, if I've got the concept right to begin with)?

I use www.hitnews.eu as my server (about £6 a month) then get the download files from www.merlins-portal.net, which is free to join.

Hitnews are always running a free three day trial so you can try it out (this can be extended using different email addresses and I dont use my correct details anyway for my membership, they take paypal too so no worries about them having your bank details (leave payment details empty on the trial). The software I use is altbinz, you will also need quickpar for repairing with occasionaly - also free. Damn nfo viewer is also handy as it reads the .nfo files which contain instructions on how to install apps.

So to summise
Hitnews
Merlins Portal
Altbinz
Quickpar
Damn nfo viewer

All above list are clickable and take you straight to the download.

Other than that for my downloads for after they are downloaded I use winrar, Nero, Virtual Clone drive (to mount .iso images that are on my hard drive instead of burning to disc). And occasionly HJ split although this is rarely needed.

Wow! That's a pretty comprehensive post. Remind me that I owe you one next time we meet in the pub. even better - now that I've got all this info in one place I can leave it aside for a while and come back when I have a block of time to get things moving. {Edit: and all instances of "I" above should be replaced with "my friend" of course}.

Did you install it yourself? Was thinking of doing this but sounds complicated!
