Question about FreeSat / an old Satellite installation

Good sunny afternoon all,

I have a question regarding FreeSat. I understand this is a free service similar to FreeView available to people who have a dish on their house.

The place we've moved in to DOES have a dish, but we don't have / won't have a contract with Sky. I guess previous occupants had Sky and never had the dish removed. I *think* our cable installation comes in via the same socket on the wall (that says Eurobell on it).

Anyway, I was wondering if we could take advantage of freesat if we had a freesat box? I'm planning on getting rid of cable which will mean getting rid of my lurvely cable box and there's no aerial on the roof here to received terrestrial/freeview.

Thanks all for the help, will leave rep.

I was wondering on this also.
Cause Sky wants 100 for a new reciever but if you go thrw dixons for 75 can get a 2nd dish installed with a HD freeview receiver for 75 quid.

I think the (orginal/normal) Sky box can't decode HD source, would be a better idea for sky to offer a HD reciever for freeview for 75 with just one disk.

The HD receiver needs a Sky card to operatate, also

Good luck on you Q lad...!

Yup, you can re-use the old Sky dish and low-noise block (Assuming it still works) and leave it pointing at the same point in space, 'cos the Freesat service uses the same Astra satellite that Sky does. (Astra 1D).

If you're prepared to hang on a few months, there should be some Freesat PVRs in the shops.

Enjoy!

Just put a sky digibox on the end of the cable, you can buy one for around £5 at the boot sale or £15\£20 from cash converters.........try to get one with the card still in it.........you wont get any premium or basic chanels but you will get almost all the same chanels as the new freesat service............and all, i repeat all freesat chanels can be recieved on a sky digibox using the Add Chanels facility..........except any HD chanels
The Eurobell socket is just for cable tv.........the dish cable will be just a cable comming thru the wall...........also the new Freesat boxes will work off the dish but they cost from £60..........

The £20 card will only get you 2 more chanels than without a card..... 5 and sky3.....maybe a couple more...............i am sure you can buy a digibox with a working card for less than £20.
Chanel Four is available not encripted via add chanels

Try Cash Converters or similar type shops, small adds, friday ads, but i think boot sales are cheapest but you take your chances............please remember, the card will only get you the free to view channels...........no pay\subscription channels at all..............free to air channels do not need a card in a digibox to view..................
