Question about networking media players, hard drives, streaming etc

Ok so at the moment I have 2 TV's in the house both with a WDTV and a 3TB HDD plugged into each....

Internet is supplied via a BT HUB

If I wanted to purchase a couple of the networked media players and a networked HDD how would that exactly work please?

Or can I plug my existing HDD into the hub/router and stream like that

Obviously I don't have much of an idea about networking this lot so in simple terms please guys

I didn't know what a WDTV was, but a quick (and it was quick) google, suggests you can plug additional drives via USB but has no network connectivity. Would that be right? (I appreciate there may be different versions, so not jumping the gun!)

Personally, I would have recommended running a server, then something like a REVO instead of your WDTV. I don't think you can avoid replicating setups in what you have now. with a server you can have multiple devices connecting to a single source all streamin at the same time. Ie a true video dukebox.

only a small house so I'm wondering if its worth the hassle or just stick with what I've got at the moment

I can 100% recommend a Revo. Money very well spent.... But just wait for a deal. Never pay full price!

Obviously you can just run the Revo as a stand alone and plug extra USB drives in...... But together with a media server, it's the dogs danglies. All bedrooms in my house have PCs and panel TVs, along with the games room and lounge. Plus of course laptops, phones and tablets..." which can all connect at the same time, and all give access to stream a different movie etc. Obviously that scenario doesnt happen that often... But it's too good not to mention!

Obviously, it's the XBMC that is the icing on the cake!

PS you can use any old PC as a server, so it's not like you need to fork out a fortune for that ability.

Cool.... Looking at the specs, it says you can access files from your network, so it's a simple case of connecting your WDTV to your hub, then creating shares on any PCs on your network. Not sure if that also means you can share content from the 2 WDTV devices though. No reason why not, but there could be something stopping that.

I'll bail out now, as you really do need someone who has one of these to answer!

Just to let you know, if you plug an external HDD into the USB hub of the BT Home Hub, the HDD will act as a NAS. I never tried to stream videos, music, etc. but I can access all the files on my external HDD from any PC or MAC I have within the home network.

The wireless access on PC is easy, but to access on MAC, there is a special link in which you have to typed in, which I can't find where the article is in my bookmarks. However a simple Google search should come up
