Am familiar with the phrase generally being used for speed or ££, would like to know where its originated from....? anyone? because as we all know tonne is 1000kg lol.. unless there was some old measurement back in the days which meant ton = 100 of something..?
Google says 'no' to my query..........

Thanks!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundredweight

Wiki says, 1 hundredweight is 112 or 100lbs, 1 ton is still in the 2000s lbs or 20 hundredweight's.

A "ton" is 100 cubic feet of capacity. The slang came from the docks where the dockers used the original "ton for storage/loading.;-)
