Quick mobile phone sim card question

I want to check the coverage at home of a particular mobile phone network. Is it possible to just put one of their free sims in to test the signal without registering the sim.

I have tried the online coverage checker but just want to make sure.

The network I want to check is o2 so could I use a Tesco mobile sim instead.

Thanks

I did the same thing with three a while back and it worked a treat :-) so can't see why not

Can anyone else confirm either way?.

Picked a o2 sim up and that showed a good signal in this area.

as long as it is showing O2 on the phone and not SOS calls only - which would then show the strongest network as SOS calls can be made on any network
