Yeah, some cartridges had their own save game storage, however for the others you will need a memory card. That is if you want to save the games, of course. For a quick go on a sports game, for example, you don't need one to play it.

As mentioned above, check the requirements of the game - some games could use save memory added to the cartridge however this added to the cost so many opted to use the memory card instead. Many of the Nintendo published releases had memory onboard the cartridge whereas most of the third party releases relied on a memory card.

I don't know how the memory cards have aged but the quality of a lot of the third party ones was just poor as they simply didn't keep the data. It was incredibly frustrating powering up the console one day to find the data on the memory card for all the games was just gone entirely...

OH says that you will need a memory card and he says it might be worth also buying the official Nintendo expansion pack which overclocks it, it's like an enhancement pack which plugs in and you plugs your cartridges in, it lets you play games like Turoc etc., but he says he can't remember what it was called right now!

Zelda Ocarina of Time is a serious must have.

Probably the best game ever. I remember when i first stepped out onto the hyrule field. Looked immense.

It was just called the expansion pak (no 'c'), it doubled the N64's ram taking it from 4MB to 8MB rather than overclocking it - it usually added a higher resolution mode or better textures to the game, with Perfect Dark many of the game modes weren't available without it.

vinylandtrinkets - that's a good question, I'm not sure to be honest - some of our memory cards were ok and some just seemed to be junk. No internet at the time so no idea if some ranges were known to be bad.
