'Racial' theme in Spurs' fans abuse of Adebayor

The abuse of Emmanuel Adebayor in Tottenham's Champions League defeat at Real Madrid had "racial undertones", says anti-racism group Kick It Out.

Spurs fiercely denied offensive chants aimed at the striker were racist.

But Kick It Out chairman Lord Ouseley said the words "Your dad washes elephants," were a slight on his African heritage.

"It's not racist but it is abusive and it has racial undertones to it," Lord Ouseley told BBC Radio 5 live.

Oh Dear. Not a very good thing to be hearing, at all. Yes, Adebayor was an Arsenal player though that shouldn't allow him to be the subject of such vitriol.

Even if your Dad is a elephant washer?

Too me it sounds like a stupid chant that makes no sense. Is it suggesting that africa is backwards, and instead of bankers and teachers they have elephant washers. or that is is a rubbish job in africa and an insult on his father. Either way i dont see it as racist

To me its like them saying to us 'your dad washes buses'. We have quite a few buses in this country, doesn't mean there being racist. Its just a punt saying that his dad is in a very low skill job.

Indeed. saying "your dad works as a non skilled labourer and your mum works in the oldest proffession" just doesnt have the same humour. Besides, it doesnt rhyme.

To be honest Adebayor is a di**

But the chant is racist - and therefore they deserve whatever 30-odd quid fine they get from the footballing authorities
#16
Actually only the player is saying it is racist, whats wrong with racial undertones and "abuse" goes on in every ground. I would hope they sing it for the whole match, as I would be peed off if someone called me racist

Would they chant this song if he was white?
#19
I can't believe i'm actually reading this rubbish, it's a football banter chant....not racist. The race card gets played far too often, everything is put under the microscope to try to find anything that could be branded as having the slightest 'racist undertone' & causes more predujice than anything else!

Depends if his Dad was a white Elephant washer I suppose. He could have worked in Chester Zoo, so yes, they probably would.

So he would only get called this if he was white and his dad was acually an elephant washer. Sounds racist.

Agreed. If it was something like "Adebayor, Adeboyor, has lips made of rubber that drag on the floor", then they could have a point. But the original song was merely commenting on his mother & fathers occupation....

If your Dad is an elephant washer & your mum is a ****, then I doubt it matters what colour you are, your going to have a song made up about you. Are you actually debating a race issue or the fact his father may in fact only wash tigers & therefore the song is factually incorrect ?

Do white footballers ever use the race card? I guess when they used to sing "your old mans a dustman" that would be considered racist by those who like to use the race card at every opportunity?

No, what you are doin, just like you always do, is pull the race card.

The colour of his skin is irrelavant.

If I sang a song that said your mother was a hoare or that your father washed elephants, it appears you would be more offended at the elephant part. I'm not about to ask why, but I can tell you it sounds very odd.

Your suggesting that only black people eat banana's ? Well, as you well know, that is also factually untrue & very racist to suggest so.

I'm surprised no one has reported your comments on here yet......

I always thought the banana offering was meant to be an offence and racist way of suggesting the targeted individual was related to a monkey? Thanks for correcting me that its all to down to dietry and nutrititional values of the food we eat.

I dislike Tottenham but how can you punish them when about ten clubs have sung this including Arsenal.

I would say its a stupid insult, but hardly racist (althouh this depends on how the chanter chanted it). I would punch anyone who calls my dad an elephant washer, not because its racist but i think its quite a funny insult and am dissapointed that i didnt come up with it...... i dont think its racist but then again i have quite a high tolerance level.

Maybe this insulting song struck a raw nerve? In his attempt to pull out the race card, he pulled out the joker instead.X)
