Why are dusters yellow?

I offer these suggestions: one of the duster's great attributes is its use for polishing. In the past, before the advent of pressurised canisters and the dreaded CFCs, this was done with beeswax. The manufacturers of such may have decided to make and sell its necessary accompaniment dusters. Wishing to keep an identification with their main product they would naturally have dyed them yellow. Early dusters were not the bright ones of today, but a more ochre colour - indeed, some were pastel green.
Alternatively: an enterprising marketing director of yesteryear may have attempted to corner the market by using most people's association of the colour yellow with springtime, through an increase in sunshine and daylight hours. He would have realised that sales of dusters would be increased enormously by using the appropriate colour especially during the annual spring cleaning season.

There are many examples of how the colour has become connected with spring, such as daffodils and the expression 'to be as busy as a (yellow) bee'. Spring cleaning with (yellow) wax and duster is an almost symbolic gesture of spreading sunlight around the home.

ps....not my words..!

That's right, or at last it's what I was taught in my 'History of Cleaning' classes at school. N.B. Wasn't there something about yellow grimy light bulbs as well?

Yeh I do that! But that's like before I go to bed if I am up late - not when I am still recovering after having to drag myself out of bed!

I'm with you Harlzter............I hate ANY domestic chore, but being a 'wimmin', as you correctly point out, there is no-one else to do it!

I usually make a start when I can't see the carpet!:whistling:

Jokin aside I dont mind doing my share, I prefer the more 'manly' stuff like getting the carpet shampooer out, which having kids and dogs is a weekly need, good thing is when we knew we was moving we got hold of some contract huega carpet tiles at the right price (we still have 80+ spares in the loft) which always clean up easily and being all way through upstairs and down we dont have the muck magnet door strips!
Best buy was a reconditioned bissell vac from a deal on here and that is awsome it actually pulls itself along!

My tip is buy quality cleaning equipment and products and life is easier!

Can you recommend a coloured, but not yellow, duster?
Also, do you put on a boiler suit for cleaning or do you find an apron adequate?

I tend to use the kids outgrown t-shirts as dusters and cleaning rags TBH and always use a damp duster it holds the dust and stops it just kicking back in the air and re-settling!
As for cleaning attire I find a Ann Summers french maids outfit suffices!

I am up most days at 5am so its no different to getting up at 7 and starting housework at 9!! LOL.....I have 5 boys and 2 are hyperactive, so normally get to bed about 1-2am then up at 5am!!

I have chucked 1 recycle bin of rubbish away just from 2 cupboards, bit of a hoarder myself and learning i have to let things go!

My husband does housework!! He cooks, he cleans the kitchen up, mops, makes beds, hoovers anything i do really. He works 5 days a week so i like to try get it done before he starts work at 5pm.
I do the carpet cleaning in this house, i have a carpet cleaner but dependant on me i sometimes hand scrub it and each individial tile in the kitchen and hallway floor...I think im starting to understand a bit why the doctor diagnosed OCD last year, but at least i get my cleaning done lol

I have bought pastel pink and pastel blue coloured dusters from Wilkinsons, don't know if they still do them though, but worth a look if you near to one.
