I posted this message on a PC site asking for help and was modded for illegal activites, when I contested the mod I was told they had no way to know I had a legit software, the website is awful it has 13 year old mods there(no joke) all they ask for someone to be a mod is they post a lot and are active on the forums, but many are bullies, I had one threaten to ban me from site for asking on the dedicated forum aimed at asking why people were modded, for saying I didnt think I needed modded. Anyway heres message

I have Vista on my PC but I want to reformat as it is full of junk from manufacturer, but I never got a recovery disc with the PC, I do have a Vista Home Premium sticker on back of PC so if I borrowed a friends disc or downloaded an ISO and used my Key would it work?

And no im not asking anything illegal just so the mods know.

This was modded I then changed it to

And no im not asking anything illegal just so the mods know.

So the difference being I didnt say "or downloaded an ISO" meant my post was modded annoying

I understand your rant but on first glance it does sound like your wanting to either borrow a mates copy or download a copy.

If your PC is quite new, Wouldn't you be able to contact the manufacture?

Also is it a dell?, They hide (so to speak) an OS copy on another partition on some machines so it elimnates the need for using cd/dvd media, You can normally access this on boot up using one of the F keys although I don't know which ones off hand.

No its a PC World PC, supposed to come with software to make a recovery disc, but it isnt there, plus according to others who did get the software it doesnt work, says a disc has already been made and people have to wait like 2 months for a replacement.

It sounds like a good complaint is needed to PC world, If you haven't got a copy of the OS and it said it came with recovery CD's then i'm sure it'll fall under one of the consumer rights laws. (Sean!!?)

To answer the original question, As long as your key is for Vista Home Premium Retail and the disc is Vista Home Premium retail it should work.

but If your license is OEM (which theres a good chance it is!) the you need an OEM disc to. (which are often different build dates although I don't think vista's been out long enough yet.

Thats why I asked, it says DSG Retail on the COA, so was worried it was a OEM version, and didnt want to pay £75 for something I own.

I did hear the people who got recovery discs from PC World could only use them on the brand of PC they recieved as it was manufacturer specific.

IIRC there are different OEM discs for different manufactures.

I don't think a Dell OEM your work with a HP etc but I have never tried it as I have always used the supplied recovery discs or re-installed from the hidden partition.

Let me have the serial number of your PC and the model number. I'll see what I can do.

The Model is Advent T9308 will give serial number in morning as im off to sleep now lol

well borrowing a mates disc should work.

I've got genuine XP and lent it to a mate to reboot his (his was genuine but the disc broke.... long story). He put in his code and it worked fine.

Not too sure about Vista though

Just off to bed now, well probably, but I used a recovery disc on my old PC with XP, from an older PC with XP which installed but told me cd key was invalid so I had to reinstall 30 days later.

I don't know if it's still the case but when I worked for DSG Advent's (their own brand) didn't come with any recovery discs, the recovery stuff was always stored on a hidden partition. I'm pretty sure it will be an OEM version too.

Yup PC world should supply the disc if it is stated on the package contents, or was made to be known to be supplied with it to the purchaser prior to payment. Simple breach of contract - albiet hard to prove.
If you'v got a legit copy & it's registered you can contact MS directly to resolve this. Otherwise take it back to Pc world/ call them (should be a landline number on sayno).

Or just remove all the preinstalled rubbish manually as it is likely it's a customised OEM supplied that will just reinstall it all anyway - there are dedicated sites for removing this sort of stuff, I know of a dell one at least - should be a similar procedure.
