rat catching cat

hi all,i have a little female cat who will not stop catching and sometimes eating rats, mice, shrews even a squirral once!!! ..she does this while she is out of a night while we are all tucked up in bed and if we forget to lock the catflap she brings them in and you can imagine it is not a pretty sight to wake up to dead rodants on your kitchen floor:(,anyways she wears a coller witha big bell on it to hopefully give the mice etc a chance but no this does not work, also my garden is like a rodents graveyard she hides them everywhere:( this is my first female cat had a male years ago and he was nothing like this maybe every now again but she does this every single night and i want it to stop,is there anything else i can try to deter her away from doing this? i know cats are predatory anaimals but she really does take the biscuit:(
thanks in advance

Yep, that's really what cats do. Half worms is the worst. I've come downstairs in the morning before to see a whole carpet full of chewed up worms. Mouse heads and guts is just the norm.

They bring them home to show you. You are meant to eat them to show your cat you love them. if you don't you're evil.

I think torture might not be the right phrase. My cats will play with the bird/mouse/shrew until it's dead. Once it's dead, it's no fun.

yeah your right mine does exactly the same unless she obviously feels peckish, her favorite is too stand on the mouse's tail for a few seconds then let go catch it,throw it in the air and then start again!!:/

Oh I agree... to a point. For example, if an unnamed poster offered me the greatest christmas ever from their heart... but I had to sit in hen faeces and a house so dirty I'd need injections... it still wouldn't be very much fun.

Some of my best christmas' have been sitting down to a nice hearty feast of animal faeces. My parents were poor. The question of if we had Turkey or Pork at christmas was usually not in regard to the animal itself.

No two cats are the same. I had one cat who used to hunt birds and then want to bring them back to show me. Fortunatley I managed to rescue most that I saw her with and they all seemed to survive.
I had another cat that loved catching mice. I was not so impressed as again they like to bring them to you and having a mouse running in the house was not my idea of joy.
I have had other cats that have not been interested in hunting at all.

But as you obviously have a hunter, I guess you will need to find a way of adjusting to her behaviour as its unlikely that you will be able to change her.

When i was a kid i remember walking up and hearing the cat-flap being battered about. Me and my brother where really scared but we decided to go to the stairs. We looked down stairs and we could see that the cat was struggling to get in the cat flap and it seemed to be something wrong with it. I went crying to my dad and he ran down stairs turned on the light and we saw the cat trying to get through the cat-flap with a rabbit.

I have only ever had one cat, a male, and he must have been really lazy because he never did anything like this! He would rather just share the dogs food than a mouse lol!

yes she is definitely a hunter, at one point i was concerned that maybe i wasnt feeding her enough so upped her pouches but no if anything she is overfed! i still think it must be cause she is a female because my old male cat wasnt really interested in hunting!!
#34
You have a female, is she neutered? Im afraid a cats natural reaction is to provide food for those that it feels cannot hunt for themselves. If she has never had kittens of her own she will turn her mothering instincts towards you and everything she catches will be for you.
You might just have to accept that she is going to hunt and kill things but remember to always give her a positive reaction to whatever she catches however disgusting it is!

yes she is neutered i had her done once she was old enough to be so she hasnt had any kittens, can i ask why should i give her a possitive reaction to bringing me so many poor usually dead creatures, wouldnt she then think its ok and bring me more??,i will admit to shouting at her alot recently and calling her ratbreath when she attempts to bring another through the catflap lol ;)
#36
Because cats cannot tell the difference between negative and positive attention, if you shout at her then she doesnt know that shes done something bad. . . all she knows is that your then giving her the attention she wanted for bringing the food to you!
The only negative cats will understand is the opposite of the positive, ignoring them, not playing with them etc (shouting, hitting etc doesnt work and will eventually make her scared of you).
You then have to slowly make her realise that your not interested in the food by doing the opposite of the positive reactions each time she brings things in.

The best thing you can do is give her lots of fuss when she comes home with nothing and if she does bring things home make hissing sounds at her and even spray her with a water bottle.

i have a girl cat that used to hunt but stopped when she was abut 4 i also have a boy cat thats 5 he goes hunting all the time even bought a mouse home carrying its baby in its mouth yuck oh managed to save them both, in the summer he bought home a mole he also loves to play with them we have managed to stop him bringing them in house by hanging a fly net up the door dont know why it works but touch wood its worked for two years

oh i see that makes complete sense,so basiclly treat her like a child ignore the negative reward the possatives :) also the water spray is a great idea she hates water!! as for her being scared ov me there isnt a chance ov that we are all scared ov her once she has her stupid head on and wants to chase us around that house trying to get our ankles :/
thanks for you great advice xx
