I wonder if anybody can advise me on keeping pet rats.

On a sad note our Hamster died yesterday, after 3 years so not too bad but after having 3 off them now would like something different and always fancied having a rat.

so my questions are has anybody got them, are the friendly and do they do stuff instead of hamsters sleeping all the time

I used to have a white one. I'd say they're a lot smarter than hamsters (I used to have 7)! Mine interacted more than hamsters and would often just sit on my shoulder and not move where as hamsters tend to be scatty and run around! They're very clean, despite what people who clearly know nothing about them will say! Mine used to claw itself up the cage if you went in the room because they love attention! Go for it!

Sorry to hear about your hamster! :-(

I used to have a pet rat. They're very friendly, but don't think they spend the night knawing at the bars of the cage (which used to drive me nuts when I had a hamster). I seem to remember that they were slightly more lively during the day; but if you want something that's going to "do stuff instead of hamsters sleeping all the time" DON'T get a nocturnal pet!! Rats can be trained a little bit to stay awake during the day, but you won't change them from nocturnal creatures altogether.

Perhaps you need a budgie or a goldfish?!

They breed like wild fire and can change sex while young etc. Bear this in mind...!!!

I like rats but I don't have the space to keep them. My friend has 3, she says they are very clean and easy to handle.

girbils are better don't smell for a start! Great fun if you get a few of them in a big tank and give them lots of sawdust they make tunnell.

Nah, Polecat...

Rats are ok, white ones tend to be a bit more vicious in my experience. How about a Chinchilla? Hours of fun..... trying to catch the damn things if you let them loose

Or a Degu....

Chinchilla's wee really stinks! I looked after my friends when she went on holiday and I was changing the litter every day - wow it was stinky.

Pretty sure mine didn't. The rats did though. Chillas are well funny though, chuck a sand bath in the cage and watch all hell break loose :w00t:

I'd always go for guinea pigs myself. Easy to handle, not a lot of smell and they have a permanent smile.

Yep, must say gps are the easiest to care for - Patrick (my sons gp) will be 7 in February. All our hamsters died between 20-24 months.

Maybe my friends chinchilla was eating the wrong food - it is chinchilla food but maybe it just doesn't agree with her.

i have had a gp before and they are lovely but dont have room or garden atm so would rather have something a bit smaller.

didnt make it to pet shop as roads to bad here will have to go weekend.

Thanx all for advice gotta go tell my daughter now the hamster is dead, i dont like doing this

If there anything like mice then get a female as the urine doesnt smell as bad as males.

Everyone thinks ewwww RAT... Their very clean, extremely intelligent and also great fun. Unfortunately their vunerable to human disease such as common cold which can kill them off quite easily. Great pets and take up little room (y) They have a right nip tho.
