Been busy for the last day and today is the day I usually go to the bank to put some money in. But when I went in to check, I was overdrawn by £14 due to my Car insurance company taking their payment 2 days earlier than usual.

The bank allowed the money to go through, and so my £60 I was putting in my account cleared the £14 overdrawn and put me back £46 in the black.

But the bank has told me they are going to charge me £35 now because of this.

I know there is bank charges etc for this, but isnt £35 a bit steep, especially when I fixed the mistake within 12 hours. Im just so annoyed that they can charge this and when I phoned my home branch, they said, they cant refund the charge and thats that.

Anyone got any advice what to do, or should I just accept it and chase my Car insurance company for a refund.

Thats what banks do, but I would certainly get hold of the insurance company and complain and ask for a refund off them as they are at fault.

Best of luck.

you should get an overdraft set up

if you dont go overdrawn all the time - go in and see manager and argue this point - ask them to reverse charges - be nice but firm -

also i always make sure i have enough in my account to cover all bills and have a bit extra just in case. maybe you should save for a month or two so you have a bit of a safety net :)
hope you get the charges back :)

contact your insurance and tell them they're at fault for taking it 2 days early. Send them a copy of the charge when you get it and request they reimburse you

With our bank lloyds if you go overdrawn you have till 3:30pm that day to put the money in and you avoid fee's.

I had a similar situ about 3 years ago. Just go into a branch ask for a list of you direct debits and say you want to close the account. They then jump all over you and want to know why ...... They soon reversed the charge !

that was 3 years ago. Now they're quite happy to see the back of people who have little money in their account and dont pay charges.

A lot of DD will state on or around the date for the charge day. Gives them the advantage, so not sure how successful you would be with insurance company. Best to change it to a standing order and follow the advice from others about approaching your bank.
I used to have so many problems with my bank that I had to learn the hard way to make sure there was always extra money in the account and to keep checking online or over the phone daily which transactions were due out.

this'll be the time when they want to give you an overdraft facility

The direct debit guarantee will cover you,as if your insurance has take the funds two days early then you can ask the bank to reverse the transaction under the direct debit guarantee.
