Rear light not working, but break light does. Its not the bulb!?

HI,

My rear light isn't working, but the brake light does. Now I know that the bulbs have 2 filaments in 1 for the brake, 1 for the rear light. So I changed the bulb (obviously thinking that the rear light filament had gone) but that didn't solve it. Also the bulb that I had thought had gone, hadn't as it worked on the other side.

I'm now thinking the rear light wire has broken somehow - somewhere, has anyone had this before? or even better... is there a motor electrician reading? :)

Any help appreciated
Thanks

Take it to your local garage.

Try hitting it. That worked for me last night! It came straight back on haha!
#3
check the plug that goes into the light they sometimes fur up/rust give it a clean should do the trick
#4
Have a look at the connection in the bulb socket sometimes damp can get in and a bit of rust or decay can form especially with the weather we have had , try running a bit of sandpaper over the contacts.

Isn't that a bit of overkill as a starting point :|

Soz about thread hijack op, have you checked the fuse?
#15
I was going to say check the fuse as well
suspended#16
Can't be a fuse, all the wires run to a central point... the bulb.

Yeah, although it's the same bulb it must be on a different circuit as it has a different switch.

Well im not sure tbh, but how much is a fuse? 15p?
I still think it could be, after all, your brake light doesn't come on when you turn on your tail lights and vice versa.

Hmmm... but one side is working. Won't the left and right rear lights be on same fuse anyway

usually fused seperately so if one goes the other is still working, do you have a meter to measure the supply?

Check contacts.

Check you've plugged the bulb in the right way. It sounds stupid - how on earth can you possibly plug the buld in the 'wrong' way? I assure you that there's two possble ways to plug in the buld on a Mk. 1 Focus. Try rotating the bulb until it fits the other way and then try it out.

I will get a volt meter from work tonight and try the connections.

Let us know if it works.

Will do, cheers Deek :)

Yup, it was the fuse. I couldn't see that light listed in my table of fuses. So I just pulled them all out found a broken 15A fuse and bobs ya uncle, fanny's ya aunt... and it worked X)
