Rebuilding a Compaq 110c

A few months back there was a deal at CPW for a £180 Compaq 110c netbook which came with XP. I bought one for my brother that's gone wrong and needed a rebuilt however despite this being a very easy task normally this machine is proving somewhat troublesome.

As far as I can tell the official method is to copy an image off the machine when new, there doesn't appear to be any preinstalled image to restore from - my brother never made this image. I've tried booting it from an oem xp Home CD but it can't find the sata drivers and the very simple bios doesn't seem to allow the machine to be switched to a legacy interface mode. I tried slipstreaming the disc with sata drivers which worked fine for installing XP however while the install completed for some reason numerous file copies failed leading to rather a bare install.

Although the CD appears fine I'm going to try slipstreaming again but was wondering as this was a popular deal here if there's a better and more hassle-free way to build this machine with XP.

Thanks,
John

It's been a while BUT I think there's a guide over at the MyHPMini User Community and Forum, which covers which specific device drivers need to be slipstreamed into the Windows XP image (you definitely need to include SP3 into the image as well).

Thanks very much for the link - that looks like a great resource for the netbook, I was struggling to find anything useful on general searches.

Ugh, this machine is really doing my head in...XP installed and working but now won't activate despite being built from an XP OEM SP2 disc. Such a great little machine but I've never come across something so difficult to build.

If you can install SP3 onto the netbook and then try to activate it then it should work, as I'm pretty sure you need it to be installed as the license key will be associated with an SP3 install from what I can remember...just a thought.
