I paid for NewsBin as my download manager (think it was about USD$25).

I use my ISPs own newsgroup servers, so don't pay separately for that part.

giganews is by far the best... or if you want something a bit cheaper try Ngroups.
#3
I use Virgin Newsgroups as Its part of my service, but theres a lot of groups not on there, and it has very poor retention, so I also pay for astraweb, which is $25 for 90gig download - no monthly fee.

i use newsdemon so far so good

Hitnews.eu

£4.50 a month, totally unlimited and you even get a 1 week free trial before paying them anything.

Without a shadow the best service in terms of retention, speeds and limits is usenetserver.com

Think I pay $14.50 per month (£7.10) for unlimited downloads. (and that really means unlimited), Download speeds to match my 16Mb connection and retention of over 100 days - which I doubt is better even on the "premium" services.

I'm paying the smae amount now as I did when I first started with them about 8 years ago. It was about 2 days retention at that time! The service provided now is superb. No server company offers better value for money for usenet. But if you know of a better one - Im all ears! (Giganews, Easynews etc are NOT better - despite the premium pricing.)

Hit news are doing a free 7 day trial if you want to get started and give it a free go here's thread http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1047168&posted=1#post1047168 , i'd recommend using grabit to control your downloads available here: http://www.shemes.com/

Funny this topic was started as i was looking for free newsgroup server access to test my new connection speed - moved house literally 500yards away yet connection speed with same isp has gone from 1mb to 4.5mb! go figure? I can't!

Well my cable connection is the 4Mb one, yet I'm currently connected to hitnews at 12Mb, downloading at 1.5Mbps :-D

I love Virgin Media.

ive just signed up for UseNeXT they offered a weeks trial or 1.5GB

prison break took 15 mins

i use newshosting

they are very very good and only cost like $15 a month for unlimited downloads and over 100 days retention i think, it always maxes out my 4mb connection and has never gone offline when ive been downloading :)

giganews beats them on all three (retention creeping up to 200). Usenetsever is cheaper so you could argue better value.

I wont argue with the retention - but what are the other two?

Both are unlimited and both (I assume giga does) allow you to max your connection.

Personally, 100 days retention is more than enough and certainly not justification for the extra $10.

But as you'll probably agree - if you're happy with what you've got, you're gonna say good things! My one and only grumble for giga is the price at approx 60% dearer! I'm certainly not knocking them.

Giganews is basically the best service out there but it's also very heavily priced in my opinion.

If my bank balance was larger, I would use it, but it isn't, so I won't. :)

UNS have been a lot better lately, they used to be very unreliable though.

I still say giganews is the best - although I use use newshosting myself as it is better value.

Like buying electrical goods at Selfridges or Harrods is the best - they give you a cappuccino and a personal demo - but they sure charge you for it in the prices :D

But the "goods" supplied (in this case) are the same - you just pay through the nose!

When you say UNS have been better lately, you seem to be implying they are flakey? Couldnt be further from the truth. Theyve been excellent for years. Granted, when I first started using them (many moons ago), it was purely because of the price. For the same money my unlimited package was 6GB on Giga and Easy news. All now provide unlimited and all provide a good service. But one is significantly cheaper!

Anway - hopefully the OP is now sorted.
