Have you got all night - there is so much to do. Some of the best drives are :
Honister Pass ( the visitor centre at the top is the friendliest visitor centre in England ).
Langdale pikes drive - watch out for the sheep , although you won't get out of first gear at some points.
Wastwater ( England's deepest lake) provides a terrifc drive & the Wasdale Head inn at the end is excellent. That's also just about the closest you can get to Scaffell Pike by car.

Pretty towns include :
Keswick
Bowness
Grassmere ( you must get gingerbread from here )

There really is much more than i can tell you - just use google on those drives i have given for more info. If you decide on the Lakes you won't regret it. I haven't been yet this year but certainly intend to as i haven't missed a year in the last 15

how about stay in Bath for a few days then take a day out at Longleat Safari Park or how about Bournmouth and take a day trip out to the Isle of White,

or have you looked at the P&O Mini Cruise from Hull. About 2.5 hours to Hull but Ferries don't leave until 7ish.

So you could drive up to Hull in the day, have a mooch around then head to the ferry port and park your car. You can book a mini cruise to either Bruge or Amsterdam. It'll only be about £35 each for the 2 nights on the boat. We did it last October. Was great.

The ferry leaves in the evening and you get there about 8am, a free bus takes you into the centre and picks you up late afternoon/early evening so you have a full day to enjoy either city.

Then you have a night on the boat and get back early the next morning. The boats have a good duty free, restaurants, cinema, show bar with entertainment & bingo. Can't go wrong seeing another country for £35 each.

Don't tell him where your going, he'll have no idea your going out of the country. Just sneak his passport with you. We've been to both Bruge & Amsterdam and they were both really good fun.

My husband wants to go to Amsterdam for his birthday! Is there much time saved by flying?

Have done lots of searching for the dates i want and cheapest is about £170 which is still ok but not £35 each. Some ferries do not sail in October apart from Halloween

around 11 hours on the ferry to rotterdam.....then transfer to amsterdam takes just over an hour

flight takes an hour then 20 mins by train to amsterdam central by train

so around 11 hour saving flying i way 22 hours return so you save a day
