Try these freebies, just google them, there are some good tools on them:

Hiren's Boot CD
Ultimate boot CD
911 Rescue disc

Don't forget, if you are recovering data make sure it is to another drive and not the same one :)

try using Restoration
it's free and does a good job. failing that try all the free ones on here, from experience different programs can find different files so its worth trying a few of them.

Hope this helps

Thank you all. :)

If you haven't already done so, do not use the drive as a boot drive - it must be set as a secondary drive or externally otherwise the ability to recover files can be signficantly reduced

Your chances of success are based on whether or not you did a quick format (i.e. only the FAT was reset) or a full format.

If it's the former then all your data is still there, but you will need a specialist piece of software to put the files back together (as suggested by the other posters).

If it's the latter then you must accept that your data is gone - although some programs & specialist companies are good at recovering data in this situation, you have to bear in mind: is the cost worth the effort?

Yeah, I don't know exactly what I did, I used a recovery disc that came with the laptop but it was a fairly quick prosess so it could have been a quick format.

I used PC Inspector. If found a lot of "clusterxxxxx.jpg" files but they didn't open, so I'm not holding out much hope.

It was just some photographs that I forgot to save. :-(

Thanks for your help. I will leave you all rep later. :)

The recovery disk should not have overwritten any existing jpegs, so they will be there somewhere - it's just a case of finding them. Unfortunately, files are broken up & scattered over the whole of a hard disk, so it's not always easy to find the pieces, which is where recovery & rescue programs come in to their own.

I doubt you'll find them as complete jpegs, which is probably why the 'files' you've found aren't opening - they're only small pieces of the whole files. If the programs suggested by the other posters don't work, then you'll have to get the camera out & start snapping again.

Yup, not a massive loss... I just felt like a bit of an idiot when I realised what I'd done lol. :)
