Shock and Disappointment as Redcats announce closure of Empire Stores
11 January 2008
Usdaw expresses its shock and bitter disappointment at the announcement made this morning by the French owned Company Redcats UK that they are to close the Empire Stores part of their business by the end of 2008. The impact of this announcement will be felt across the Companys three sites in Bradford and Wakefield, where up to 850 jobs could be lost.
Val Pugh, Usdaws National Officer, said The agency home shopping sector has been in decline for a number of years and has suffered a poor Christmas trading period in line with the high street. Nevertheless, the Companys announcement this morning is bitterly disappointing.
Empire Stores has been a household name for almost a century and a large proportion of the staff have a very long and loyal service. This is a community based business in Bradford and Wakefield and the impact of these proposals will be felt throughout the Region.
Usdaw and Sata will begin joint consultations on Monday, 14 January 2008, when we will be in a position to interrogate the Companys business case. It will be our intention to minimise the number of job losses proposed. It is anticipated that opportunities for displaced staff may arise in other more successful parts of the Companys business and it is our intention to support our members in moves within the business wherever possible.
John Hannett, General Secretary of Usdaw and Sata has a longstanding relationship with the members in Redcats UK and has expressed his sadness and regret at todays announcement.
