current boss/owners are retiring far away and as i've been working there for about a year will the new owners of the bussiness be able to give me a refernce for the year?
they've been told how good i was and the old owners no longer own the bussiness
any ideas?

Aw - could the new owners not keep you on? Do you not have a contact address for your old employer? Cos wouldnt it be better getting the reference from them if at all possible.

All you can do is ask... or.. can you get in touch with your old boss and ask them... (it does not matter they no longer own the company)

a reference is now usually a multiple choice questinnaire. im sure i heard that they cant technically give a 'bad' reference.

just pretend the old owners still run the company.....when u go for a job pre-warn them that youve applied for a role & ask them if their happy to supply a refrence....worry over

You would be better asking the old owners to give you a reference as they actually know you. The new (or the old) owners are under no obligation to give you a reference but if they do it must be fair and truthful - and the new ones may just say they don't really know you. If the old ones have said you were a good worker it sounds like they'd give you a good one. It does'nt matter that they don't own the business now.

sometimes companies ask for an Employer reference and a character reference.....your character reference could come from your old bosses & obviously the other from current gaffers....
