Probably Bad Sectors/drive Try Again And If It Stoppes At The Same Point Buy A New Drive

some more specifics might help?

Sounds as if your loading Windows XP - and your at the GUI setup stage.

if thats the case it might be worth turning the PC off, then back on. The setup will reload and might fix your issue. Underneath the estimated time there is a green animation - is that moving?

Have you added new hardware to the PC recently?
Do you know how to enter the BIOS? Can you check the hardware monitor part to see if the temps are high?

How are you doing the format?

As part of a Windows install?

As format of a hard disk can take a long time if you have a large hard disk, 30 minutes or an hour if you do a full format.

Are you aware that if you format your hard drive you lose EVERYTHING on the hard disk.

well i'm using the back up cd, its a dell pc. Yeah the green bar move's but really slow. Its on the blue screen bit where it says installing windows and its at 26 mins now. Was at 33 since 8

Like someone said, maybe a bad hard drive, but it could be the disk thats scratched or something, take the disc out (it shouldn't matter that its installing, it should just pause), give it a clean (t-shirt) and pop it back in.

still no luck, so i have gone for a quick format and its at 37%. Does anyone know how long it should take?

If you want to check for bad sectors you can get a boot disk (for free, try googling minipe). You burn the image onto a cd/dvd and it allows you to boot from it and perform loads of diagnostics,

You can scan the disk for errors, and that way you know if you are installing onto a decent harddisk or something that is just going to cause more problems.

hey, so i found out that its to do with the ntldr file. anyone had this before?

Another good recovery tool is on this bootCD: http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd
Run HDD Regenerator 1.51 to check & try to fix any bad sectors, but it can take quite a bit of time depending on how bad the drive is and the size of the drive.

Hope it helps :)

Does it say ntldr is missing?
It may be that your cd is damaged and can't read the file..

If so try to format the drive with the manufacturers recommended tool or Gparted: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=271779

Errors like that are usually down to bad ram.

Try taking out 1 stick of RAM and trying the install again, if no joy, then put it back and try another. Assuming you have more than 1

yeah its ntldr is missing. I think i might have a dodgy piece of ram because i've had my pc go off before then a blue screen came up. I can't get to another pc and i'm using my phone, any idea's? Cheers

I had that some time back. The hard drive proved to be faulty.

how much would a new hard drive cost then? How would i get windows onto a blank hd?
#18
Did you try removing one of the sticks of memory ?
banned#19
yeah i removed 1 and i bought a new 1gb stick which has just come. I can only get as far as the blue welcome screen when windows loads up then it seem's to freeze. I've got another hard drive out of my old pc. Could i use that?

Does it happen if you run in safe mode too?

Try the recovery console:

type chkdsk /f
then type fixmbr & reboot
