Mate just bought a laptop with a vga connection and he is regretting it as he thinks he cant watch anything on his tv but ive already said to him he can just get a vga to hdmi cable for a fiver which does the same job BUT

As most know audio isnt sent through vga so im looking for a cable so he can watch a dvd etc on his laptop through his tv and have the audio all going through one cable rather than having sep. cables for audio etc
Any ideas all i can find is this

ebay item number 350361203645

A VGA to HDMI cable will never work, VGA is analogue, HDMI is digital.

The audio is the least of your worries.

errr yeh it does

The wire exists, it won't work though. Want to put some money on it?

Actually HDMI was made for digital A/V transfer (both in the same cable). of course vga can deal with same resolutions as HDMI, but the signal is still analog.

Vga to component cables exist and so do vga to hdmi both work

You need the TV to have a VGA connection, or you'll need a converter box. Or both to have S-video but that will be rubbish and in SD.

the hdtv has a vga connection but what about the audio apart from a line out cable ?

DCX is right it won't work.

Simplest option is a VGA to VGA and just a normal 3.5 to 3.5 for the audio.

Some TVs have an audio cable next to the VGA slot (mine does) but I take it your friends TV doesn't? (if so just buy a 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable - same as the ones that come with monitors.

Although for better quality (but not convinced theres a huge difference) I did buy an VGA to HDMI convertor box - cost about £30 from ebay and came with the leads required (VGA and audio cable)

Just watch it on laptop?

As I understand it you'll need an active convertor as some people have said.
