There is a registry cleaner in Ccleaner which is free.

What are the specs of your computer & who told you that cleaning the registry would speed it up?

HAve you tried running an error check / defrag on your C drive ?
#3
Usually a case of too many programs loading on boot.
I use run: MSconfig to turn almost everything off.

I assume you still have plenty of drive space?

You should maybe say which CPU you have and what is the current size of the operating system drive.

and did it help?

run a defrag too

and run task manager to see what is running as may have some background processes / services consuming cpu. A lot of vista services are pretty useless for the average user and can be disabled.

Ccleaner is good for cleaning crap from computer. When it comes to registry cleaning with ccleaner be careful what you choose to "fix". I have had bad experience in the past with registry cleaning (with ccleaner). I still use ccleaner but not for registry.

Would recommend Ashampoo Win Optimizer. You may start with Trial version. They keep offering free giveaways time to time.

It used to run ok, but for a while now its been really slow.

I could easily start the boot up and eat dinner before it loaded.

The Registry thing made it a shade quicker but not much.

Will runa defrag and also look at processors.

Thanks

upgrading to Service Pack 2 is ment to bring a performance increase similar to windows 7 speed.

Meant to but not really. Junk laptops are responsible for half the speed issues as in Curry's/ Dixon's / PC world purchases etc as they install with such rubbish even before the end user has installed half the internet.
